Despite new Spider-Man movies and animated films on the way, one of the most anticipated additions to the Marvel universe won’t be on the big screen. Later this year, Prime Video will release Spider-Noir, a surprising spin-off TV show and the first live-action Spider-Man series since the 1970s. Nicolas Cage, who previously voiced the character in Spider-Verse, will star as a unique version of Spider-Man, bringing a fresh and unexpected take on the hero to television.
Details about the upcoming series have been scarce, but we now know Nicolas Cage will play Ben Reilly, not another version of Peter Parker. The series will also debut with both black and white and color episodes. A recent preview in Esquire revealed new photos of the cast and confirmed the appearance of Silvermaine, a significant Spider-Man villain, alongside other characters.
Spider-Noir Series Finally Brings Silvermaine to Live-Action

The latest preview for Spider-Noir reveals many details about the show, and finally confirms two major villains who will be featured. Brendan Gleeson will play Silvermane, a well-known gangster from Marvel comics who first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #73 in 1969. Silvermane has often been a foe of Spider-Man in the comics and is a great fit for the Spider-Noir series. While the character has become more robotic and gained superpowers recently, he’s traditionally been a simple gangster and hasn’t appeared in any of the Spider-Man movies.
The report details that Silvermane in Spider-Noir has faced numerous assassination attempts, including one by a pyromaniac claiming to start fires with his hands. While the identity of this villain is currently unknown, it leaves possibilities open, such as a character like Molten Man. The show has confirmed Jack Huston, known from Boardwalk Empire, will play Flint Marko – a name instantly recognizable to Spider-Man fans as the civilian identity of Sandman. It’s uncertain whether Sandman will possess his usual powers in the series, or if the show will reimagine them with a noir twist, but that would align with the long-running style of the Spider-Man Noir comics.
According to showrunner Oren Uziel, many great detective stories feature two seemingly separate cases that eventually merge into one. The series follows a protagonist reluctantly pulled into a larger conflict. While Silvermane is the main villain, his story is connected to the hero’s past, causing him to delve further into his personal history.
The recent Spider-Noir report further explains why Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, isn’t just another version of Peter Parker. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller point out that Cage’s character is a cynical, older man, which doesn’t align with the typical portrayal of Peter Parker as a high school student. However, this reasoning seems flawed considering the Spider-Verse movie, which established Cage’s Spider-Man Noir as a Peter Parker variant and also featured Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker – another older, more world-weary version of the hero.
They also claim there’s a narrative reason why Nicolas Cage’s character is known as “The Spider” instead of Spider-Man – similar to how characters were called “The Shadow” or “The Spirit.” The show might even reveal that Cage is playing Uncle Ben to a new, younger Peter Parker.
The eight-episode first season of Spider-Noir will premiere later this year.
