Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for the Gonron Egg manga. 2026 promises to be another great year for fans of Shonen Jump, with new manga and anime on the way. However, like every year, Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will likely see some series end. Launched in 1968, Weekly Shonen Jump is the best-selling manga magazine ever, and it’s known for publishing incredibly popular series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto. But most series don’t become huge hits, and some are cancelled if they aren’t selling well. Shueisha, the publisher, often ends series that aren’t performing well.
January brought disappointing news for fans of Shonen Jump, as two popular series, Otr of the Flame and Harukaze Mound, were cancelled. Following this weak start to the year, another series, Gonron Egg, which began in October 2025, also appears to be in trouble. After only 14 chapters, the manga has jumped forward three years in the story. Given the current situation, Gonron Egg seems to be heading towards a conclusion, and it might end with fewer than 20 chapters.
Gonron Egg Might Get Cancelled This Year

Many new shows rely on surprising twists early on to attract viewers, because they’re at high risk of being cancelled if they don’t gain an audience quickly. Even the incredibly popular manga Jujutsu Kaisen faced this danger. To grab readers’ attention, the author, Gege Akutami, initially killed off the main character and then brought them back to life – a move that significantly contributed to the series’ massive success. While this tactic worked well for Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s not always successful, as seen with Gonron Egg. It’s possible that Gonron Egg‘s story is now nearing its conclusion.
I’ve been a huge Jujutsu Kaisen fan for a while, so I was really excited when Gonron Egg was announced. Honestly, though, the response hasn’t been great. As of February 2025, it’s only at a 5.35 on MyAnimeList with over 300 ratings – which is pretty disappointing! The idea itself is cool; it’s set in a world twenty years after these massive creatures called Drakarchs basically destroyed everything. But even after being out for almost four months, it just hasn’t seemed to click with readers, and that’s a shame.
Almost all of humanity has been enslaved by monsters, forced to work without rest. Three years later, in Chapter 14, the slaves are finally freed and many of their Drakarch masters are defeated. But Reigoku, the Drakarch ruler of the human realm, responds by assembling a powerful army to crush the rebellion. The chapter concludes with the promise of a final, decisive battle for liberation, suggesting the story is nearing its end.
