RGG Studio has decided not to remake Yakuza 4 or Yakuza 5 as ‘Kiwami’ titles. They’re wrapping up the main Yakuza series after altering the storyline with Yakuza Kiwami 3.
According to studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama, the recent changes to the storyline are paving the way for a new series of Yakuza games. He stated during a livestream that Yakuza Kiwami 3 will likely be the final game in the Kiwami series, and that the studio plans to start a completely new series instead of continuing with remakes.
Yokoyama says players will understand the reasoning behind this choice once they experience Yakuza Kiwami 3, as it will impact how future events are perceived.
As a huge Yakuza fan, I’m really disappointed with the new Dark Ties storyline. It’s not just the awful decisions to cut out important side stories and, even worse, recast a character with a terrible real-life history. It actually breaks the stories of Yakuza 4 and 5! After the changes they made in Yakuza Kiwami 3, those games just don’t line up with the current narrative anymore, which is incredibly frustrating.
So, RGG Studio seems to be building on what they did with Yakuza 4 and 5, but honestly, it’s shaping up to be something totally different than what we’re used to. It’s still got that core feel, but they’re clearly taking it in a new direction.
In our review of Yakuza Kiwami 3 on PS5, we gave it an 8 out of 10. We said it’s a really enjoyable remake for both longtime fans and newcomers, though some changes to the story and characters might disappoint some players.
