New Power Rangers Disney+ Reboot Faces Major Problem The Franchise Never Had Before

A new Power Rangers series is coming to Disney+, but it’s facing a challenge no previous version of the show has seen. Throughout its long history, the rights to Power Rangers have changed hands several times, leading to different creative visions and eras for the franchise. However, this Disney+ reboot will mark a significant change unlike any that came before.

The original Power Rangers thrived on traditional TV because networks had more airtime to fill, allowing for a full 50-episode season of action and adventure. This new reboot, however, is designed for streaming, meaning it will have significantly fewer episodes. This creates a challenge in developing the relationships and teamwork within the new Ranger team.

Power Rangers Disney+ Reboot Is Going to Have Fewer Episodes

When Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first aired on Fox Kids, it was a huge hit, with 60 episodes in its first season and 155 across three seasons. This was unusual for television at the time. Fans quickly noticed a pattern – each episode usually featured a new monster that the Power Rangers had to defeat, making most stories self-contained and rarely connected to larger storylines. This led to the term “monster of the week” to describe the show’s format.

The Power Rangers series occasionally featured ongoing storylines, like in “Green With Evil” or “The Wedding,” but those weren’t the main focus at first. Originally, the show was designed to release a new, self-contained episode each week. However, this format allowed fans to really get to know and connect with the main characters. It provided the opportunity to develop the relationships between team members and, crucially, build a strong bond with the audience.

Despite cast changes and the show being completely revamped over the years, Power Rangers consistently featured around 40 to 50 episodes per season. Even when Disney and then Neo-Saban took over, the episode count stayed within that range. However, shows made specifically for streaming services like Disney+ are different. They typically have much shorter seasons, usually around ten episodes.

Streaming Has Changed Power Rangers

Fans of Power Rangers saw how the show would change with streaming when Power Rangers Dino Fury was released. While it was the first Power Rangers series available only on streaming, it still had two full seasons with 22 episodes each. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury was the first to have a shorter run with only ten episodes, but it managed to continue the story from the previous two seasons on Netflix without interruption.

This new Power Rangers series, coming to Disney+, won’t be a simple remake. Developed by the creators of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, it’s designed for today’s streaming viewers. Because of the way streaming works, it likely won’t follow the same week-by-week adventure format as previous Power Rangers shows – there just isn’t enough time to tell those stories properly. This version will be more focused and won’t have the freedom to explore different ideas like earlier iterations did.

The new Power Rangers series will be different from past versions because it’s planned as one continuous, unfolding story. While it won’t necessarily be darker or more mature, the show will be less episodic. Viewers won’t get to know the characters as well if the cast changes frequently, and the slower release schedule – only releasing a new season every couple of years – might make it harder to build the same kind of connection with the show as before. Hopefully, the quality of the new series will overcome these challenges.
