The latest news about Moana 3 is the most promising update we’ve had so far regarding the animated sequel. This comes as fans are eagerly awaiting more from the Moana franchise, including a live-action version of the original 2016 film.
Moana 3 rumored to be in works ahead of live-action remake
Sources say Disney is developing a third Moana movie. Industry insider Daniel Richtman shared on X (formerly Twitter) that work on the animated sequel has already begun.
Okay, so Disney isn’t letting the world of Moana rest! After giving us Moana 2 in 2024 – which originally started as a Disney+ series, believe it or not – we’re already hearing news about Moana 3. But that’s not all – they’re also planning a live-action remake of the original 2016 film, set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026. Dwayne Johnson is thankfully returning as Maui, and they’ve cast Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana. It’s clear Disney is really building out this franchise, and I’m cautiously optimistic about where they’re taking it.
Disney+’s most popular movie is still the original Moana. The sequel, Moana 2, was a huge success in theaters, earning over $1 billion worldwide. Disney is now starting work on a third Moana movie faster than they did with the second one. Moana 2 came out eight years after the first film.
Director David Derrick Jr. has given fans a glimpse of what might happen in Moana 3. He believes there are exciting story possibilities now that Moana has become a demigod, and the movie could pick up on the hint from the end of Moana 2 that villains Matangi and Nalo might return (according to ComicBookMovie).
Disney Animation usually spends at least six years creating sequels, and they generally focus on making new, original films. While they’ve started development on Moana 3, it likely won’t be released until 2029 or 2030.
Disney hasn’t announced who will star in Moana 3 yet. While Auliʻi Cravalho is likely to reprise her voice role as Moana, a different, younger actress will play Moana in the live-action film.
The studio has not announced a release window or production schedule.
