In many versions of the Superman tale, it’s depicted that Clark Kent discovers Krypto when he was a teenager in Smallville. However, not many stories delve into what Krypto was up to on Earth prior to being reunited with his original owner. The miniseries titled “Krypto: The Last Canine of Krypton” is filling this gap by unraveling an unknown past, suggesting that a lesser-known DC villain took him in before Clark Kent.
The opening chapter of Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton, penned by Ryan North and illustrated by Mike Norton, concluded with Krypto, the Steel Dog, finding a new home. However, this new owner turned out to be none other than young Lex Luthor. Predictably, Lex is not the ideal dog parent. The second issue begins with a note cautioning readers about “scenes involving a cruel individual and a noble canine.
In an attempt to disregard all he learned about dog care during that afternoon, Lex resorts to mistreating Krypto, attempting to dominate him through physical abuse and food deprivation. This behavior seems to mirror the mistreatment Lex endured from his own family. Paradoxically, despite his overall unpleasant demeanor, Lex confides in the Steel Dog about his personal issues. He also shares with Krypto his unusual ideas for escaping his family and amassing wealth.
How Krypto stopped Lex Luthor’s first crime
In a devious plan, Lex crafted an explosive device designed to release toxic amounts of carbon monoxide. After causing devastation, the device would self-destruct, simulating an electrical failure. This ruse enabled Lex to murder his aunts and uncles, create an alibi, and collect the life insurance payouts he had stealthily secured under their names.
Interestingly, Lex postponed implementing his scheme due to Krypto. He understood that his pet would tragically meet its end for the sake of selling the unintentional blaze theory. Luthor was apprehensive about it appearing too odd if he and his sole companion both miraculously survived. Yet, when the explosion happened prematurely, Lex bravely put himself in harm’s way to rescue Krypto from its enclosure.
In this cinematic adventure, when I found myself in a pickle, Krypto – the canine counterpart of superhero fame – sprang into action. Lex Luthor, ever the antagonist, attempted to muzzle Krypto, but alas, his efforts fell short before the neighbors intervened, rescuing Lex’s family from a raging inferno. It turns out that even before our friendly skies were graced with Superman, Krypto was already thwarting the malevolent plans of Lex Luthor – a testament to his heroic instincts and unwavering loyalty.
