Masayoshi Yokoyama, an executive producer at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, recently suggested that Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties could be the last game in the Kiwami series. While older titles like Yakuza 4 and 5 might still be remade, Yokoyama clarified that any future remakes won’t use the Kiwami name.
According to Yokoyama, while some upcoming games have been revealed, Yakuza Kiwami 3 will likely be the final installment in the Kiwami series. He suggests they’ll be moving on to a new series of games after this one, as noted by Reddit user Dastanovich.
He suggested they’re planning a fresh way to remake some of the classic Yakuza games, possibly to better connect them to the series’ ongoing story.
Spoilers for Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, and Yakuza 6: A Song of Life below.
He clarified that they weren’t planning a direct sequel like Like a Dragon 9, but instead a completely new series with a different focus. He suggested players would get a better understanding of their vision after playing Yakuza Kiwami 3, and that he was currently focused on long-term plans and the future direction of the franchise.
When Yokoyama talks about Yakuza Kiwami 3, he’s referencing the reappearance of the Daidoji clan in the game’s story. This group was first introduced in Yakuza 6: A Song of Life, where they were key to resolving the plot and allowing Kiryu to disappear, ensuring the safety of Haruka, her family, and the orphans of Morning Glory from future attacks.
The newest game, Yakuza Kiwami 3, brought in the Daidoji clan and made some alterations to the story of the original Yakuza 3. This suggests that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio may be planning to revisit and expand the stories of older Yakuza games before getting to Yakuza 6, giving the Daidoji a more significant part to play. The Daidoji clan also had a prominent role in the latest release, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Today marks the release of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties on PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. This version revisits the story of Yakuza 3 and provides a new look into the past of Yoshitaka Mine through the Dark Ties expansion. Players can expect updated graphics and gameplay, plus new side content, mini-games, and karaoke tracks for both Kiryu and Mine.
