A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Just Confirmed It Won’t Answer 1 Major Baelor Targaryen Question

Baelor Targaryen is a fascinating character in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but a key aspect of his story remains a mystery. Portrayed by Bertie Carvel, Baelor is next in line for the Iron Throne and stands out from other Targaryens in both this series and House of the Dragon. He’s genuinely good, kind, and honorable – a type of leader rarely seen throughout the Game of Thrones universe.

Given his goodness, strong moral character, and status as the future king, I can’t help but question if Baelor is aware of the ancient Targaryen prophecy. This prophecy, often called the Song of Ice and Fire, predicted a terrible winter and a threat to all humankind – the White Walkers – and stated that only a Targaryen king ruling over a unified Westeros could stop it. This belief drove Aegon the Conqueror to unite the kingdoms, and it’s been shared between kings and their heirs ever since. But does Baelor know about it?

Baelor Targaryen Probably Doesn’t Know About Aegon The Conqueror’s Dream

The prophecy about Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire was first mentioned in House of the Dragon, so we don’t know for certain if any Targaryens were aware of it. Currently, we only know that Rhaenyra shared it with her son and heir, Jacaerys Velaryon. However, given the devastation caused by the Dance of the Dragons, it’s likely the prophecy wasn’t widely spread within the Targaryen family.

Baelor seems like a leader who could potentially bring people together and motivate them when necessary, from lords and ladies to commoners. However, he probably just has a good heart and isn’t driven by a grand ambition, though that would make his story more interesting. Other Targaryens, like Daeron, also have visions related to dragons, but there’s no evidence the prophecy from the Conqueror survived the civil war. When asked about the Catspaw dagger – which belonged to Aegon and bore the prophecy’s inscription – showrunner Ira Parker jokingly explained they didn’t have the budget for such details.

Currently, it doesn’t look like Aegon’s dream will be part of the story anytime soon, and that’s understandable. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place nearly 80 years after House of the Dragon, and its story doesn’t center around the king or the future of the realm like HOTD does. While the dream serves a purpose in House of the Dragon, it wouldn’t be crucial to this story… at least not yet. If the show continues for the planned 15 seasons, things could change when the story reaches the point where Egg becomes King Aegon V Targaryen, which is well after Baelor’s death.

In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, Maester Aemon, the brother of Egg, speaks about dreams and prophecies. He knows about the prophecies concerning the Prince That Was Promised and the idea that “the dragon has three heads.” However, he also suggests that Egg himself experienced prophetic dreams, as shown in this passage from A Feast for Crows:

Let me tell you, this movie really gets under your skin. It’s about facing down nightmares, and the film suggests those nightmares can actually destroy you. There’s a sense that the characters – and honestly, we, the audience – are standing on the edge of something huge, something ancient and powerful. It’s a story filled with both incredible beauty and terrifying possibilities, things that are almost too big for the human mind to grasp. It’s deeply unsettling, but in the best way possible.

It appears Egg was fascinated by dragons and likely had dreams about them. Old prophecies mention a chosen savior, and the show House of the Dragon seems to have connected this figure to Aegon the Conqueror’s vision. We know Egg actively tried to revive dragons, possibly to strengthen his authority over rebellious lords. However, it’s also possible his efforts were motivated by the ancient prophecy surrounding the Song of Ice and Fire.

The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could potentially reveal more, assuming it continues for a substantial amount of time. While it likely won’t solve the mystery surrounding Baelor, and the prophecy appears to jump across multiple generations (we do know Rhaegar Targaryen was aware of the ‘Prince That Was Promised’ legend), the information might resurface eventually.

New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms release Sundays at 10 pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
