Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo both became famous through their roles in the Marvel movies, and they’ve been using that success to explore other acting projects. Ruffalo has received Oscar nominations for his work in critically acclaimed films like Spotlight and Poor Things, while Hemsworth has impressed audiences in movies such as Rush and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Although they’re both returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this year, you can see these former Avengers co-stars together first in the new thriller Crime 101, which comes out in theaters this weekend.
Before its release, the film Crime 101 gained attention for its classic style and famous actors, and early reviews suggest it’s delivering on that promise. Currently, it holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 36 reviews. This is an impressive score, matching that of Avengers: Endgame, the biggest Marvel film starring Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. In fact, Crime 101 has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than almost any other Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, only falling behind Black Panther (96%).
Why Crime 101 Has Such a High Rotten Tomatoes Score

The movie Crime 101, adapted from Don Winslow’s novella, is receiving positive reviews for several reasons. Critics particularly praise its ability to evoke the feel of classic crime dramas. The film, similar to the work of directors like Michael Mann, tells a gripping story about a heist in Los Angeles. Crime 101 stands out in today’s Hollywood because it’s a well-crafted, adult-focused drama with a moderate budget – a type of movie that used to be very popular but has become rare, as the industry now largely focuses on big franchise films.
Beyond the exciting plot, Crime 101 features a strong cast with impressive performances. Alongside stars like Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, the film showcases talents such as Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and Nick Nolte. Keoghan really shines as the unpredictable element, adding a burst of energy to the story. Berry also stands out, effortlessly captivating audiences with her charm and presence. Hemsworth and Ruffalo deliver an engaging dynamic reminiscent of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Heat, with Hemsworth playing the skilled thief and Ruffalo as the determined detective hunting him down. Reviews suggest the entire cast is excellent, with each actor bringing their character to life convincingly.
While not everyone loves it, Crime 101 is generally receiving positive feedback. Some viewers find it too similar to classic crime films like Heat, and others wish the plot moved faster. However, most opinions are favorable, suggesting it’s worth seeing. It remains to be seen if these good reviews will translate into strong ticket sales, especially since it’s opening alongside several other new releases – Wuthering Heights, Goat, and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die among them. With so much competition for viewers’ attention, success isn’t guaranteed, but Crime 101 is proving popular with its intended audience.
It will be interesting to see if the Rotten Tomatoes score for Crime 101 changes in the coming days as more reviews are published. Currently, only 35 reviews exist, which isn’t many. We expect that number to grow significantly – likely to over 100 – even if Crime 101 doesn’t get as many reviews as a major blockbuster. This means the score could potentially fall below that of Avengers: Endgame, but probably not by much. Generally, early reviews give a good indication of how most people will feel about a movie, and Crime 101 seems to be a worthwhile watch.
