Netflix has added a critically acclaimed horror film to its already impressive collection. The streaming service boasts a wide variety of scary movies, including classics like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and modern hits such as Train to Busan and M3GAN 2.0. New titles are added regularly, and horror fans will definitely want to check out the 2021 film that recently became available.
Scott Derrickson’s horror film, The Black Phone, starring Ethan Hawke, is now available on Netflix as of February 12th. The movie tells the story of a 13-year-old boy kidnapped by a masked killer, and how he uses a strange, disconnected phone in his basement to get help from the killer’s past victims. While The Black Phone is streaming on Netflix, its sequel, Black Phone 2, is currently exclusive to Peacock.
The Black Phone Is an Intense Supernatural Horror-Thriller Worthy of a Franchise
The Black Phone is easily one of the most effective horror films in recent years. Instead of relying on cheap thrills or excessive gore, director Derrickson expertly creates a sense of creeping dread. The movie builds a truly unsettling and claustrophobic atmosphere that stays with you long after the credits roll. Set in a gritty 1970s suburb, the film focuses on compelling characters and delivers genuine emotional impact. Ethan Hawke delivers a standout performance as the terrifying villain, The Grabber, and is wonderfully complemented by the strong performances of Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw.
The original Black Phone was a remarkably good horror film, and its sequel, Black Phone 2, proved that it could be the start of a successful franchise. The 2025 film expanded on the story and mythology introduced in the first movie, moving beyond a simple survival story into a larger supernatural series. It was well-received by both critics and audiences, earning a 72% rating on the Tomatometer and an 83% Popcorn Score on Rotten Tomatoes – slightly lower than the original’s 81% and 89%, respectively. While it’s uncertain if the villain, The Grabber, will return, fans wouldn’t mind seeing a Black Phone 3 happen.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix has added a bunch of new movies and TV shows this February, and The Black Phone is just one of the highlights. You can also now stream films like Crazy, Stupid, Love, the first two How to Train Your Dragon movies, the 2025 remake, and Zero Dark Thirty. For TV fans, all seasons of the Night Court reboot and the popular early 2000s show What I Like About You are now available.
