Netflix Sets New Adaptation Of Bestselling Dark Romance Phenomenon Lights Out

Romance continues to be incredibly popular, and now Netflix is planning to turn the bestselling novel Lights Out by Navessa Allen into a movie or series.

Published in 2024 by Slowburn, Lights Out quickly became popular on BookTok. The novel centers on Aly, a trauma nurse, and her mysterious online love interest, Josh. As they act on their hidden desires, Aly finds herself caught in a dangerous game, realizing she’s being watched by more than just Josh, and their lives begin to unravel.

According to Deadline, Netflix is developing a TV series based on Allen’s work. Hannah Schneider, known for her work on shows like The Waterfront and Why Women Kill, is leading the project as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Allen announced the exciting news on Instagram, exclaiming, “LIGHTS OUT IS IN DEVELOPMENT AT NETFLIX!!!”

Lights Out is the first book in Allen’s Into Darkness series, featuring steamy romances that are each self-contained. The second book, Caught Up, came out in 2025, and the third, Game On, will be released on March 31st of this year. A supporting character in Lights Out, Junior, takes center stage as the male lead in Caught Up, and introducing him in the Netflix adaptation could pave the way for future seasons based on the series.

Romance novels are incredibly popular right now, and Hollywood is taking notice. So far, though, film and TV adaptations have mainly focused on contemporary romance – stories about adults and their relationships – by authors like Emily Henry, Elsie Silver, and Rachel Reid (author of Heated Rivalry). There’s also been interest in ‘romantasy’ – romance with fantastical elements – from authors like Rebecca Yarros and Callie Hart. In fact, Netflix is currently working on adaptations of books by Henry, Silver, and Hart.

As a film and TV enthusiast, I’ve noticed YA romance novels are really killing it with streaming adaptations lately. Shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty, Maxton Hall, My Life With the Walter Boys, and Finding Her Edge have all done incredibly well – getting renewed for multiple seasons on platforms like Prime Video and Netflix. It’s great to see these stories resonate with audiences on screen!

Dark romance is becoming increasingly popular, and Navessa Allen isn’t the only author in this genre whose work is headed to Hollywood. The first book in Brynne Weaver’s Ruinous Love trilogy, Butcher & Blackbird, which features the popular serial killer couple Sloane and Rowan, is being developed into a movie directed by Chris McKay and written by Laura Kosann.

With a large and devoted fanbase already established through Allen’s Into Darkness novels—the first book has around 80,000 reviews on Amazon—Lights Out is poised to be another popular romance title for Netflix.
