Spider-Gwen & Spider-Punk Spinoff Films Still Officially in the Works At Sony

Even though Marvel Studios is trying to unite all its heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures still owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and related characters. To make the most of this valuable property, Sony made a deal with Marvel to include Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) in the MCU while also building its own separate movie series. However, this separate series, known as the Sony Spider-Man Universe, has struggled, with most of its live-action films failing to make a profit at the box office. While the Venom movies initially did well, interest waned, and films like Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and Morbius all lost money in theaters. Luckily, the Spider-Verse animated movies have been a critical and commercial success, leading to plans for solo films focusing on Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) and the popular Spider-Punk (voiced by Daniel Kaluuya).

Even though the Spider-Verse movies have been incredibly popular, the third film has been delayed several times, making fans unsure about the future of the series. While a live-action Spider-Noir show starring Nicolas Cage is coming in May as the first spin-off, Sony hasn’t said much about plans for films focusing on Gwen Stacy and Hobart Brown. But in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville confirmed that both of those spin-off projects are still happening. Because this news came directly from the heads of the animation studio, it seems likely these spin-offs will be animated movies, keeping the same unique visual style as the original Spider-Verse films.

It Makes Sense for Sony to Pivot Its Efforts Towards the Spider-Verse

Sony has repeatedly found it hard to make successful Spider-Man movies centered around characters who aren’t Spider-Man himself. Villains or supporting characters often lose their appeal when separated from Peter Parker, leading to disappointing results for Sony. The Spider-Verse movies cleverly avoid this problem by featuring multiple versions of Spider-Man, each thriving in their own universe. Because of this, and the fact that the Spider-Verse films have been both critically and commercially successful, it’s a smart move for Sony to focus more on animated movies in that style, and to bring back popular characters from those films.

The upcoming Spider-Noir series, starring Nicolas Cage, will be a key test for the studio’s future plans. It will show whether different versions of Spider-Man can carry their own stories without relying on Miles Morales or the big, action-packed events of the multiverse. If audiences enjoy the detective-style story in Spider-Noir, it will prove the studio’s idea of using the animated multiverse as a central setting for many stories is a good one.

The animated film Spider-Noir will debut on MGM+ on May 25th. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is planned for release on June 18, 2027.
