Netflix is heavily invested in anime, and this month sees the return of one of its popular originals, Baki-Dou, on February 26th. However, despite this focus, not all anime series on the platform are guaranteed to continue. Recently, the creator of a major Netflix original anime announced its cancellation. While Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed this news, the lack of updates about the series’ world suggests the announcement is likely true.
The animated series Terminator Zero, which debuted on Netflix in 2024 as a collaboration with Production I.G., has been cancelled after one season. While the show received positive reviews from both critics and viewers, creator Matt Tomlinson revealed on social media that viewership numbers weren’t high enough to justify renewal. The series explored the origins of Skynet and the development of a new AI to combat it, blending classic Terminator elements with innovative new robotic designs. Tomlinson expressed disappointment at not being able to continue the story he envisioned, but also noted he was proud of the complete narrative the eight-episode season provided.
Terminator’s Renewal Chances Are Zero
Tomlinson expressed gratitude for Netflix’s support, noting he was pleased any of his story made it to animation. He had originally envisioned the show running for up to five seasons. He praised Netflix as a supportive and creatively freeing partner, but explained the show’s high cost and time commitment meant its continuation depended on strong viewership, which ultimately didn’t materialize.
I’m a little bummed to hear the anime-original plans aren’t happening right now, but I’m seriously excited to know that all the scripts for season two are already written! Plus, we have an outline for season three, which is amazing! Matt actually had a full five-season arc planned when he first pitched the show, and he’s thinking about maybe sharing some details about that in the future. He also hinted that he might find another way to finish the story, but don’t worry, it definitely won’t be continuing on Netflix!
In a surprising turn of events, the creator of Terminator Zero revealed that Netflix offered him the opportunity to create two or three more episodes to finish the story, but he turned it down. Tomlinson felt the first season ended strongly and was satisfied with where the story concluded. Currently, there are no confirmed plans for future Terminator movies or anime series, though most fans expect the T-100s to reappear eventually.
Wow, can you believe Terminator Zero is wrapping up? I’m really curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on how it all ends! Let’s chat about it – head over to the ComicBook Forum and join the discussion now!
