29 Years Later, Star Wars’ Next Movie Officially Makes a Major Empire Story Canon Again

The world of Star Wars is back in theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it’s going back to its roots. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, tasked with eliminating remaining warlords from the old Empire. He doesn’t realize these warlords are secretly united by a hidden Imperial group. While details are scarce, it appears the Mandalorian’s mission will face complications, sending him and Grogu on a dangerous journey through Hutt space.

The return of the Empire is a developing storyline set during the time of The Mandalorian. In Season 1 of Ahsoka, Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn came back from exile in another galaxy, and he’s likely uniting various warlords as part of a larger plan. While Thrawn hasn’t appeared yet in The Mandalorian and Grogu, his schemes probably started there. One thing is clear: a significant Imperial storyline is officially part of the Star Wars universe again.

Star Wars is Officially Bringing Back the Imperial Remnant

Even though the new show The Mandalorian and Grogu is full of surprises, recently released merchandise is revealing some important details. A new line of Black Series action figures, perfect for collecting, officially identifies the soldiers as part of the “Imperial Remnant.” This term – referring to what’s left of the Empire – has appeared in The Book of Boba Fett, but seeing it used so officially on the figures is noteworthy.

In the older versions of Star Wars stories, the Empire didn’t completely collapse. Instead, its forces broke apart and took control of various regions of the galaxy. Eventually, Admiral Daala brought them back together, forming a smaller but unified Empire. This group later made peace with the New Republic and became known as the “Imperial Remnant,” which was essentially the name of their government.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they removed the older stories (once called the Expanded Universe) from official Star Wars history. For a while, the official story showed the Empire being defeated at the Battle of Jakku, with smaller groups of Imperial forces operating on their own. However, new merchandise related to The Mandalorian and Grogu indicates that these remaining forces are now being officially referred to as the “Imperial Remnant,” hinting that a secret group coordinating them – the Shadow Council – will soon be openly revealed.

The Galactic Civil War is Heating Up Again

This is a big moment for the Star Wars universe, offering a key piece of information about what’s happening in The Mandalorian. Previously, the story suggested the Empire mostly disappeared after its defeat, only resurfacing much later as the First Order. However, it now appears there was a continued, organized Imperial resistance – a second wave of the Galactic Civil War. This is a thrilling development that will likely have lasting effects far beyond The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Okay, so Ahsoka Season 2 is shaping up to be a massive showdown, and things are starting to click into place. We already knew a big fight against the remnants of the Empire was coming, but new intel suggests a New Republic team is heading to Dathomir – that’s the spooky home planet of the Nightsisters, and now apparently Grand Admiral Thrawn’s headquarters. Dave Filoni has been hinting for ages at a huge military clash between Thrawn and Admiral Ackbar – a rivalry that goes way back to the old Star Wars stories. Honestly, knowing there’s a real, functioning Imperial Remnant out there as a major power makes all of this feel much more grounded and exciting. It’s building towards something really big!

The big question is how much of a threat the remaining Imperial forces actually pose. We know Imperial troops are spread throughout the Outer Rim—possibly even with a base on Tatooine—and some of their leaders are teaming up with pirates who are causing trouble for the Republic. With Grand Admiral Thrawn leading them, the Imperial Remnant will be a serious power; Palpatine himself thought Thrawn was one of the few tacticians capable of defeating the Rebel Alliance (the other being Grand Moff Tarkin, who died in A New Hope).

Considering this new information, The Mandalorian and Grogu appear to have a much larger role in the overall Star Wars story than we initially thought. The mention of the “Imperial Remnant” suggests a new era of galactic war is beginning, with incredibly high stakes and the story expanding into other forms of entertainment. It promises to be an exciting development.
