A full year before its release, Christopher Nolan’s film titled “The Odyssey” has sparked a mad rush for tickets. Imax 70mm screenings scheduled for the weekend of July 17–19, 2026 were quickly sold out within an hour when they became available at midnight ET on July 17. This swift sellout is said to have raked in approximately $1.5 million and ignited a flurry of costly resales on major platforms.
The Odyssey fans react to resale prices after Imax tickets sell out
Immediately after The Odyssey’s release, tickets started appearing for sale on marketplaces such as eBay because of the overwhelming interest. A source informed The Hollywood Reporter that scalpers are valuing tickets at around $300 to $400, with certain listings even reaching $500.
A Dallas movie ticket was found priced four times higher than its usual range of $25-$28. One online listing provided two seats for a July 19 screening at a price of $399, while four tickets for AMC Lincoln Square were put up for auction starting at $1,000 each.
Imax posted an announcement, saying: “Purchase your tickets today for the inaugural IMAX 70mm showings of ‘The Odyssey Movie’ directed by Christopher Nolan. The movie will be in theaters on July 17th and 26th.
Prominent movie theaters across the U.S., including AMC Lincoln Square (New York), Universal Cinema AMC (Hollywood), and Regal Irvine Spectrum (Orange County) experienced full houses. Imax theaters in cities like San Francisco, Dublin, Ontario, Fort Lauderdale, Buford, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, King of Prussia, and Dallas also filled to capacity.
Theaters such as Cineplex Mississauga Square and Vaughan in Canada, along with London’s BFI Imax and Science Museum locations in the U.K., quickly ran out of tickets. Similarly, venues in Melbourne (Australia) and the Czech Republic reported high demand, with many seats either already taken or very few remaining.
In my humble opinion, as a movie enthusiast sharing thoughts post-screening, an outpouring of discontent was evident on social media platforms. This stemmed from two primary concerns: firstly, the skyrocketing prices for reselling tickets, leaving many fans financially stranded; secondly, the scarcity of available tickets, making it a challenge for moviegoers to secure their spots.
Christopher Nolan’s movie, titled “The Odyssey,” reimagines Homer’s ancient Greek tale, with Matt Damon portraying Odysseus. Notably, Nolan is filming this production entirely using Imax cameras, making it the first commercial feature to do so entirely.
The lineup features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, and more. Despite the ongoing production process, Universal recently unveiled a sneak peek in movie theaters before the release of Jurassic World Rebirth earlier this month.
In his last movie, Oppenheimer, Nolan raked in an impressive global box office total of about $975.8 million. Approximately $190 million of that came from Imax screenings. For The Odyssey, it’s said the production cost is roughly $250 million.
