As a total movie and TV buff, I have to say, Charlie’s Angels is one of those ’70s shows everyone remembers. It was a really fun action-crime drama about these three awesome women detectives in Los Angeles, always getting into trouble and kicking bad guy butt! It ran for five seasons and even became a movie, and now they’re trying to reboot it again. Honestly, the last movie didn’t quite hit the mark, but I have a good feeling about this new one – it might actually be great!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is working on a new Charlie’s Angels movie. Pete Chiarelli, known for writing Crazy Rich Asians, is writing the script. Drew Barrymore, who starred in the 2000 Charlie’s Angels film, and her production company, Flower Films, are also involved. The project is currently in its early stages, so few details are available.
Barrymore’s Reported Involvement Is Good News After the Most Recent Charlie’s Angels Movie Bombed
The Charlie’s Angels franchise has been rebooted many times. The 2000 film, starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, was successful and led to a sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003. However, the 2019 film, directed by Elizabeth Banks and featuring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, didn’t fare as well. This version introduced a new group of Angels but wasn’t a hit with audiences or critics, effectively ending any further development of the franchise.
If Drew Barrymore is involved in the new Charlie’s Angels film, that’s encouraging. The 2000 movie, directed by McG, was a well-received update of the original series – it was fun, action-packed, and didn’t take itself too seriously. The 2019 reboot didn’t capture that same energy, but fans still have a lot of affection for the 2000 film, so Barrymore’s participation suggests this new movie might try to recreate that same enjoyable vibe.
The new Charlie’s Angels film also benefits from having Elizabeth Banks’ husband, Max Chiarelli, as a writer. He previously wrote the successful Crazy Rich Asians, as well as the popular comedies The Proposal (starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds) and Now You See Me 2, all of which were positively received by audiences.
