The upcoming HBO series based on the popular books is already creating a lot of excitement, with a planned release in 2027. Production on the first season is currently happening, and the show will revisit the familiar story while also delving into the backgrounds of characters like Draco Malfoy and including details that weren’t shown in the movies. The new Harry Potter series will boast a talented cast, including newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Veteran actors John Lithgow and Nick Frost will play Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively.
HBO’s new series based on the Wizarding World will feature many recognizable actors, but one big question remains: who will play Lord Voldemort? While Ralph Fiennes famously portrayed Voldemort in the Harry Potter films, he didn’t appear until Goblet of Fire – previous actors, Ian Hart and Richard Bremmer, played the role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This new series has the opportunity to cast its Voldemort from the beginning, and names like Cillian Murphy and Tilda Swinton have been mentioned as possibilities. Ideally, the series would recast the role with an actor who has already played Voldemort before.
A Succession Star Has Become the Latest Actor To Portray Voldemort
With so much excitement around the upcoming HBO series, fans of Harry Potter have another way to enjoy the story thanks to Audible. Previous audiobooks have been narrated by popular voices like Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, but this new version from Audible takes things further. It boasts a full cast of over 100 actors, along with immersive sound effects and music.
Audible has released the first four books in the series, and the audiobooks feature a star-studded cast comparable to the films. Hugh Laurie voices Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed plays Severus Snape, and Keira Knightley portrays Dolores Umbridge. Matthew Macfadyen is another well-known actor lending his voice to the new Harry Potter audiobooks.
Jamie Macfayden is famous for his work in shows like Pride & Prejudice and Succession. He recently joined the Marvel world as Mr. Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine. Now, his addition to the HBO Harry Potter series feels natural, especially considering his history with Succession and its director, Mark Mylod.
HBO’s Harry Potter Is Already Using One Voice Actor From the Audible Series
Considering the well-known actors who voiced characters in the Audible versions of Harry Potter, it’s likely some will also appear in HBO’s upcoming seasons – and that’s already happening. For example, Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the HBO series, also voiced the same character in the audiobooks for the first three Harry Potter books.
I’ve been following the casting news for the Harry Potter series on HBO, and while David Macfayden initially seemed like an unexpected choice, I honestly think he’d be a fantastic Voldemort. What really excites me is that he apparently went with a higher-pitched voice – a different approach than Ralph Fiennes, who gave an absolutely iconic performance in the films. Honestly, after Fiennes set the bar so incredibly high, the series needs a Voldemort that feels a little more true to how he was originally written in the books, and it sounds like Macfayden is aiming for that. It’s a smart move, and I’m really intrigued to see what he brings to the role.
Given that the HBO series is already using actors from the Audible recordings – like the one playing Hermione – it’s likely they’ll do the same with a talented actor like David Macfayden for a significant role such as Voldemort.
