A year ago today, the latest Dragon Ball release put a fresh spin on a previously debated power-up, and fans loved it! Transformations have always been a key part of what makes Dragon Ball so popular. Throughout the series, new transformations have kept things exciting and interesting. Even after many years, Dragon Ball continues to introduce them, and the transformations of the Saiyan characters are consistently the most impressive.
Goku and Vegeta have consistently demonstrated the incredible power of the Saiyan race. Starting with the original Super Saiyan transformation, their abilities have evolved through multiple new levels, and later, the ‘God’ forms were introduced. While the Super Saiyan God transformations are considered the strongest and official versions, the Super Saiyan 4 transformation has always been a point of debate among fans. Surprisingly, the newest Dragon Ball series, Daima, has made Super Saiyan 4 official and even enhanced its design, much to the delight of viewers.
Dragon Ball Daima Brought Back the Iconic Controversial Transformation One Year Ago Today

Dragon Ball GT has always been a bit of an outlier in the Dragon Ball series because it doesn’t fit into the official storyline established by Dragon Ball Super. Since fans generally consider Super to be the main, continuous story – and GT isn’t part of that – it’s remained a controversial installment. This also means the Super Saiyan 4 transformation, which first appeared in GT, is divisive among fans. While many love its unique design, its non-canon status causes disagreement. As Super moved forward with the Super Saiyan God forms, Super Saiyan 4 became a fan-favorite transformation that most didn’t expect to see animated in a modern style.
As a longtime Dragon Ball fan, I was absolutely blown away by what happened in Dragon Ball Daima! Exactly a year ago today, on Valentine’s Day 2025, episode 18, “Awakening,” dropped, and it featured the return of Super Saiyan 4 – a form many of us loved from Dragon Ball GT! The scene was incredible: Goku was getting completely overwhelmed by the Supreme Demon King, Gomah, and just when things looked hopeless, Neva stepped in with some magical help. The result? Goku transforming into Super Saiyan 4! What’s even cooler is that Daima didn’t just bring the form back – they actually improved the design, making it feel even more powerful and true to what Super Saiyan 4 should be. It was a fantastic moment and a huge surprise for all of us fans!
Dragon Ball Daima Didn’t Just Incorporate Super Saiyan 4 But Also Improved It

In GT, Goku achieved the Golden Ape transformation due to a change in his DNA. After mastering this form, he evolved into Super Saiyan 4, a design that emphasized the wild, animalistic side of his Saiyan ancestry. Daima achieves a similar transformation through a comparable process—Neva’s magic alters Goku’s DNA, awakening his primal instincts, which are immediately visible in his new form. While Daima’s Super Saiyan 4 design closely resembles the one in GT, it’s essentially a refined and improved version.
This Super Saiyan 4 form aims to capture the true, primal nature of the Saiyan race, and its design enhances this idea with subtle details. For example, Goku’s forearms are noticeably larger, emphasizing a powerful, ape-like build, and his consistent coloring represents a unified being, moving beyond the human-ape hybrid look. These choices make this Super Saiyan 4 form not just a nostalgic throwback, but a polished and improved version. Importantly, because this form is now considered official canon, it finally brings a fan-favorite transformation into the established storyline.
However, it’s still not clear how Daima fits into the story alongside Super. If Daima is meant to be part of the same timeline as Super, its absence from Super feels strange and doesn’t quite connect the two stories. It’s possible Daima is starting a new storyline where events happen in separate universes. If that’s confirmed, a sequel to Daima could build on what it’s already established. This would mean the popular Super Saiyan 4 transformation would be official canon, and Vegeta could even transform into Super Saiyan 3 – opening up exciting new possibilities for the Dragon Ball universe with a multi-universe concept, which many fans would welcome.
