Netflix’s new crime thriller, Million-Follower Detective, could be the next big hit. Following the massive success of the Korean show Squid Game – which broke streaming records and became a global sensation – viewers are looking for another captivating series. Million-Follower Detective might just be it.
If you’re looking for a quick, gripping show to watch over the weekend, the Taiwanese thriller Million-Follower Detective is a great choice. It’s only eight episodes long, each around an hour, and centers on a masked woman who can predict when social media stars will die. Given how popular crime thrillers are on Netflix, this one could be your next binge-watch.
Million-Follower Detective Hits The Same Tone As Squid Game
Squid Game instantly stood out, largely thanks to its memorable jumpsuits which quickly became popular for costumes. The new series, Million-Follower Detective, seems to be taking a similar approach, featuring a main character with a unsettling, simple mask – a wide smile and shark-like black eyes. Beyond the visuals, both shows also share a similar dark and suspenseful atmosphere.
What’s particularly unsettling about Squid Game is how it takes familiar childhood games and turns them into something frightening and violent. The most chilling example appears early in the series, in the episode “Red Light, Green Light,” where a seemingly innocent robotic doll gives commands before eliminating players who don’t follow them.
The series Million-Follower Detective cleverly mixes adorable and unsettling elements. The main character sounds like a child but is disturbingly cheerful when predicting violent deaths. The story frequently shifts between a bright, colorful style and a much darker, more serious mood, reminiscent of film noir or a bleak vision of the future. This contrast is a common technique that works very well for the narrative.
Squid Game Paved The Way For Shows Like Million-Follower Detective
Squid Game was a groundbreaking TV show that demonstrated the potential for non-English language series to achieve worldwide popularity on streaming platforms. This success encouraged Netflix and other streaming services to invest in more international content, resulting in a diverse range of excellent original shows.
I’m really hooked on the idea behind Million-Follower Detective, and I can already tell the show’s style could become super recognizable. It’s a Chinese-language show, so you’ll need to use the subtitles, but that’s no big deal! It’s awesome that international shows are finally getting some love, and honestly, I think Netflix only took a chance on this one because Squid Game showed everyone there’s a real appetite for shows from around the world.
