I’m so hyped for Crimson Desert! It’s coming out in about a month, and Pearl Abyss is still sharing details. I was worried about how they’d handle cosmetics, but the marketing director, Will Powers, just confirmed they won’t have a cash shop for them, which is awesome! It’s a relief to know you’ll earn those things through gameplay.
In a recent podcast, Powers explained that the game is a one-time purchase and doesn’t rely on ongoing microtransactions. While there are pre-order bonuses, any additional content released with the game at launch will be purely cosmetic, meaning it won’t affect gameplay.
When questioned about a potential in-game cash shop, he confirmed there wouldn’t be one. He specifically stated there would be no store selling cosmetic items for real money, explaining that the game is designed as a full, upfront purchase meant to be enjoyed without the need for additional microtransactions.
Pearl Abyss, the company behind Black Desert, is often associated with games that heavily focus on in-game purchases. Since Crimson Desert began as a prequel to Black Desert, many expected it to follow the same path. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least when the game first releases. It’s important to remember that this is true ‘at launch,’ as things could change later on.
The development team has hinted they’re open to adding more content after the game releases, depending on player interest. This could mean optional cosmetic items, and potentially larger additions like new features, bosses, quests, or characters. This approach is common in the gaming industry, especially for games in this price range, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
Crimson Desert will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 19th. If you’re curious about playing as Kliff and his journey – even the less lawful parts – you can find more information here.
