Recent rumors suggest Sony is thinking about delaying the release of its next PlayStation console, potentially until 2028 or 2029, sources say.

These statements are based on a new report that explains how artificial intelligence is impacting the need for computer chips and the cost of RAM. These issues were previously mentioned as potential reasons Sony might delay the release of the PlayStation 6.

Bloomberg also reports that this would significantly disrupt the plan to keep players engaged between console releases. Nintendo, a key competitor that benefited from high demand in 2025 when the new Switch 2 boosted sales of storage cards, is also considering a price increase for that device in 2026, according to sources familiar with their plans. Representatives for both Sony and Nintendo did not respond to requests for comment.

Recent discussions suggest Sony may not be able to release the PlayStation 6 in 2027, despite earlier plans. An analyst at MST Financial stated last month that the PS6’s launch will likely be delayed, a claim supported by reports from late 2025.

There were rumors that Sony’s PlayStation 6 would be released in 2027, but that now seems unlikely. However, the next Xbox console is expected to launch next year. According to AMD CEO Lisa Su, Microsoft is planning a new Xbox in 2027 – a console that will be more like a powerful PC – and AMD is working with them to make it happen.

Even though the cost of RAM is going up, Sony says it has secured enough supply to last through the 2026 holiday season. The company seems to be anticipating potential difficulties specifically with the PlayStation 6.
