According to a recent announcement, Virtuos has disclosed that they are carrying out significant job cuts across their global studios, impacting approximately 7% of their overall staff. This means around 70 employees in Europe, where the team working on The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is based, will be affected by these layoffs.
Approximately 200 jobs may experience changes in Asia as a result of this “shift in responsibilities.” The adjustment impacts teams experiencing reduced occupancy and sluggish demand, which are being influenced by fundamental changes within the industry.
We appreciate the valuable input from those affected. To help them through this change, we’re offering separation packages, career guidance, and opportunities to transfer roles within our international organization wherever feasible. Our top priority at this time is handling this transition sensitively, openly, and considerately.
What impact might these changes have on ongoing video games such as “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered” (recently updated to version 1.2), “Cyberpunk 2077”, and “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater”? Virtuos, in its statement, has reiterated its unwavering dedication to all partnerships, promising to continue investing in global delivery, technological superiority, and creative synergy. This means they aim to stay the preferred partner for top video game creators worldwide.
Although expressing thanks towards the affected staff members, the company is claimed to have pressured the team to complete the project for Oblivion Remastered, which supposedly brought no royalties or bonuses. Additionally, bonuses were said to be reduced and a wage increase was halted in February. On top of that, it’s also alleged that they have stepped up their involvement in generative AI, with a source indicating that the transition has progressed from “a handful of group-level presentations” to “compulsory entry-level training sessions” within a year.
It seems that Virtuos Lyon is protesting against potential job cuts, this comes at a time when there might be a change in leadership within the company. Keep an eye out for more news to find out if there will be additional lay-offs in the near future.
