Rich Fleider, a former art producer at Sony Santa Monica, shared on LinkedIn that the games God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022) have collectively earned over $1.4 billion in sales. He highlighted achieving this success while leading a team of over 70 in-house artists and coordinating with numerous external partners around the globe.
Fleider’s work on the popular video games Borderlands and Borderlands 2 is another key achievement. These games have collectively sold over 100 million copies during his time at Gearbox Entertainment.
Okay, so huge news for God of War fans! Sony Santa Monica just announced they’re going back to the beginning and remaking the original three games. It’s super early days though, so they haven’t shown or said much yet – expect a wait before we get any real details. The coolest part? TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos, hinted he might be coming back to reprise the role instead of Christopher Judge, which is awesome!
Sony and Mega Cat Studios recently surprised gamers with the release of God of War Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer inspired by classic Metroidvania games. The game tells the story of a younger Kratos and his brother Deimos as they investigate the disappearance of a fellow trainee.
The God of War series started in 2005 with the first game on PlayStation 2. It was a huge success, selling over 4.6 million copies, and a sequel, God of War 2, followed just two years later. The second game was even more ambitious and sold over 4.2 million copies quickly. The story of Kratos’s quest for revenge against his father, Zeus, concluded with God of War 3 in 2010 on PlayStation 3. This installment was the largest and most critically acclaimed of the three.
The God of War series has expanded with several spin-off games, such as Chains of Olympus (2008) and Ghost of Sparta (2010) for the PSP. In 2013, God of War: Ascension offered a backstory to the main series and even included multiplayer. After that, the series went on hold until 2018, when a new God of War game was released, essentially restarting the story with a different take on the main character, Kratos. This installment takes place years after the previous games, showing a more mature and less rageful Kratos. The story focuses on Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they journey through a world inspired by Norse mythology to fulfill a final request for Atreus’ mother.
As of today, God of War Ragnarök concludes the story of Atreus in a way that feels complete. Despite this, it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of the God of War series, and future games are expected. In addition, a live-action TV show is being developed, with Ryan Hurst portraying Kratos.
