‘Jackass’ Star Johnny Knoxville to Lead New Thriller ‘Night Sessions’

Johnny Knoxville, best known as the star of Jackass, is taking on a new challenge: a psychological thriller called Night Sessions. He’ll play a therapist dealing with his own problems who finds himself in a dangerous situation. This role is a big change for Knoxville, who is usually known for physical comedy and stunts. The producers at Pont Pictures believe it will be a chance for him to really show off his acting skills.

Austrian director Gregor Schmidinger, known for his critically acclaimed 2019 debut film Nevrland, is directing Night Sessions. The upcoming film stars Knoxville as Dr. Rick Brennan, a popular American psychiatrist living in Berlin. Dr. Brennan hosts a late-night radio show where he offers advice to callers, but his life takes a dark turn when a mysterious caller accuses him of a terrible crime. This accusation sets off a dangerous game of cat and mouse between the two.

To build suspense and a feeling of intense pressure, almost the entire story will take place in a single location: the radio station where Brennan hosts his show. Though the story is set in Berlin within the world of Night Sessions, filming will actually occur in Serbia. According to Mair Vargas, the production team found an ideal location in Belgrade with a view of the city’s striking brutalist architecture. They believe it’s a perfect match for the story and plan to begin filming there this year.

‘Night Sessions’ Is a Black List Gem

IFC Films/Sapan Studio

Christopher Beachum wrote the screenplay for Night Sessions, and Mair Vargas has praised it as one of the best he’s seen recently. Interestingly, Vargas found the script on the Black List – a well-known collection of top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Many scripts from the Black List have gone on to become successful films, including Academy Award winners like Argo, Slumdog Millionaire, and Promising Young Woman, as well as popular and critically acclaimed movies like The Revenant and Hell or High Water. This makes Night Sessions a promising project to keep an eye on.
