Just two weeks before its release, the developers of Resident Evil Requiem didn’t release a demo, which is disappointing but not surprising – they previously stated their priority was completing the game. On the bright side, a new trailer has dropped, and it’s packed with so much detail it’s almost overwhelming!
Okay, so Leon pulls off his glove and you can see he’s been in a fight – seriously bad bruising, like an infection is setting in. Then this totally messed up infected shows up, looking like a Crimson Zombie but with a Licker’s head! It was tough to take down, even a shotgun blast wasn’t enough. That explains why Grace is making those special injectors – they basically make their heads explode! It’s a good option instead of the Requiem, and you can even take them down stealthily, though, yeah, there’s a lot of blood. It’s effective, though!
The scene shifts to survivors being attacked by zombies on a rain-soaked street, and Leon steps in to help, quite literally asking them a question with his axe. Grace appears much more confident than before, which is a great change. Leon demonstrates incredible skill, throwing a fire axe with pinpoint accuracy – it makes you wonder if he took a class on it! He also revisits the Raccoon City Police Department for the first time in decades, a significant moment considering how much the building has deteriorated. Interestingly, as Leon drives back the way he came during the original outbreak, the same gas station – and even the wreckage of his truck – are still visible after all these years.
Okay, so the trailer dropped a ton of info, honestly enough for a whole new game in the series. We all kinda figured it out already, but it’s confirmed – Leon’s infected! You see him take off his glove and there are these nasty black bruises, which seem to be caused by whatever Elpis is. And get this – Sherry Birkin is back! She’s basically taking over Ingrid Hunnigan’s job, guiding Leon through his earpiece. But here’s the weird part – she’s wearing a glove too, and everyone thinks she’s infected with the same thing as Leon. It’s getting complicated!
The situation is more complicated than it seems. Sherry finds a report detailing Latent Onset T-Virus Syndrome, also known as Raccoon City Syndrome. This condition develops when traces of the t-Virus slowly change within the body over time, and it’s what’s been causing the illness in the people the FBI is investigating. All the victims survived the Raccoon City disaster, but there’s no known cure. The first sign is black bruising, and Sherry warns Leon he might already be at Stage 2, where affected areas lose feeling. Worryingly, the marks eventually damage internal organs.
Stage 3 means it’s reached a critical point: those infected die within one to two hours and then become the zombies we’re currently dealing with.
Then there’s Emily, a delicate, small woman with light-colored hair who is being held at the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, now controlled by Victor Gideon. She seems to be blind or have very poor eyesight. It’s clear she’s connected to the large, stalking monster that chases Grace at the beginning of the game – they even share similar clothing. What’s most striking is how much she looks like a younger version of Grace.
This information could finally shed light on her background. It’s possible she’s the sole survivor of a series of experiments, which would explain why Gideon values her so much. We might also discover Emily is actually one of the people Gideon experimented on. While many believe the monster is Alyssa, Grace’s mother, transformed by Gideon’s experiments, that idea has been around for a while. What’s more interesting to me is that even after Leon heavily damaged the creature with the Requiem, it came back and resumed chasing Grace.

It’s easy to track Grace’s progression. She didn’t have the large revolver during her first encounters with the creature – Leon gives it to her after rescuing her. But in the trailer, she does have it, and uses it to attack the monster. And since we saw Gideon secretly watching the creature’s remains, it’s likely he’s involved in its return. Judging by the latest trailer, with the massive monster rampaging through the halls and destroying everything in its path, we’ve only seen a small part of the terrifying things to come.
Let’s talk about Gideon. He’s currently presented as the person responsible for the recent deaths, and the official website states he used to work for the Umbrella Corporation, researching the t-Virus. But the newest trailer reveals Gideon has a superior who is actually responsible for what happened to Grace. This raises the question of whether Grace is the result of those experiments. It also makes you wonder: is Albert Wesker pulling the strings behind Gideon’s actions? Or could Oswell Spencer be involved somehow? Even a descendant of Spencer seems like a plausible possibility.
The mention of Gideon’s past work with the Umbrella Corporation made me consider who he might actually be. It got me thinking about researchers who worked for the company and have since died – who could still be alive and involved? Maybe the key isn’t just about Umbrella, but about who knows Grace, or even Alyssa Ashcroft. Interestingly, Greg Mueller’s name popped into my head as a possibility.
Players of Resident Evil Outbreak might recall Mueller as a key villain. He controlled a powerful Tyrant named Thanatos and used it to carry out his plans. He was responsible for altering Yoko Suzuki’s memories and successfully developed a vaccine for the Daylight strain of the t-Virus. After a confrontation with survivors like Alyssa, they managed to create several samples of the vaccine. He was seemingly killed – shot in the head and left behind when Raccoon University was destroyed. Most people assumed that was the end of him.
Interestingly, Peter Jenkins, a former colleague of Mueller before his death, described Daylight as something that blocked or slowed down a process. That’s a bit like what happens with the t-Virus in Raccoon City Syndrome – it’s kept under control, not entirely eliminated, allowing the body to gradually build resistance without fully transforming.
Could Mueller have caught the virus from the person who seemingly revived him? Sherry believes he likely used a drug called Daylight to hide the symptoms and stay hidden long enough to modify the virus, potentially creating the incurable strain known as Elpis. This would explain why the CIA and Pentagon have no records of it.

Gideon has a metal plate covering his face, seemingly to cover an old injury. It also includes several lenses, which could act as glasses – similar to what Mueller used to wear.
If you need more proof, look closely at one of the monsters Leon kills with his rifle. You’ll notice a glowing orange weak spot on its right side. Upon closer inspection, it’s actually a heart, much like the one from Thanatos, but with more visible arteries. Unlike the original Tyrant (T-002), where the heart seemed fused with the body, this monster’s heart is distinct. It’s clear this creature has changed significantly, but traces of Thanatos – or a related form – are still apparent.
The virus strain that infected Raccoon City and caused Raccoon City Syndrome was called Epsilon. The new virus is named Elpis. It’s just a theory, but there seems to be a clear link between the two, and Grace appears to be central to it. Whatever happens, the danger is greater than ever. If Leon is experiencing symptoms of Raccoon City Syndrome, are other survivors like Ada Wong, Jill Valentine, and Claire Redfield also affected? What about Sherry Birkin? Is the original outbreak still a threat?
With the release of Resident Evil Requiem just around the corner, in two weeks, we’ll soon discover if Elpis is a more developed version of the Epsilon virus. The story suggests Grace holds the key to understanding Elpis – and possibly even saving the world. Hopefully, this will finally bring closure and peace to those lost in Raccoon City.
