Sony might not release the PlayStation 6 until 2029, and many dedicated PlayStation fans are celebrating the news online.
Maybe I’m increasingly out of touch, but honestly I find it a bemusing state of affairs.
If this happens, the PlayStation 5 will have been around for longer than any previous PlayStation generation. Surprisingly, many fans aren’t upset about this – they actually seem happy! Some even think Sony should hold off on releasing a new console until 2030 or later!
What is that about?
It’s true that many people feel the PS5 hasn’t been as impressive as they’d hoped. Game development takes longer these days, and releasing games on both older and newer consoles has made the differences between generations less noticeable. I understand why – the improvements aren’t as huge as they used to be, like when the PS2 first came out.
Let’s be realistic – don’t pretend the older consoles were enjoyable by today’s standards. I dare you to go back and play PS4 games for a week, dealing with their slow speeds and long loading screens. While the improvements aren’t a massive leap forward, they’re still significant – the changes are gradual, not a complete overhaul.
Let’s be honest, we’re not seeing the same big leaps in console technology as we used to. These days, console upgrades are starting to feel more like the incremental improvements we see with smartphones. However, just because the changes are smaller doesn’t mean they’re unimportant. More efficient, quieter, and more powerful hardware still offers real value to gamers.
What I find most confusing is this: if someone isn’t interested in buying a PS6 when it first comes out, they probably just won’t buy one at all.
With games now being made for multiple PlayStation generations, you can comfortably keep playing on your PS5 for a long time. Even if the PS6 comes out in 2027 and you’re not ready to upgrade until 2030, that’s perfectly fine. Upgrading to a new console is always your choice – it’s never required.
So, why champion a supposed delay?
According to Bloomberg, company insiders believe any problems would be a significant surprise, stemming from a lack of computer memory caused by artificial intelligence – not because the technology is no longer improving as expected.
This doesn’t seem like Sony proactively addressing what customers want; instead, they appear to be responding to unavoidable market forces.
This won’t change the common complaints about the PS5. Sony will likely continue releasing its exclusive games on PC, and Naughty Dog will probably still take several years to develop and launch a new title.
However, this will likely slow things down, as the PS5 will probably feel outdated within a few years.
Each new generation of technology revitalizes the field and inspires innovation. They encourage developers to keep improving, even if it’s in small steps. Without this constant renewal, the entire tech world risks becoming stagnant.
Honestly, if people are still using their original PlayStation 5s in 2029, that’s fine. But I’m a little surprised to see so much excitement about sticking with the same hardware. It seems odd for an industry that’s all about innovation to celebrate not making progress.
