Forget the MCU, Hollywood’s Best Cinematic Universe Returns in 10 Days

I’m so excited because it feels like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to be everywhere again! They have some huge movies planned for 2026, like the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, plus new shows like Daredevil: Born Again and VisionQuest. It’s been a while since Marvel felt as big as it did with Avengers: Endgame, and honestly, another franchise has been quietly gaining ground. But get ready, because they’re about to make a big splash too – in just ten days from now, actually!

Warner Bros.’ “Monsterverse” has become a popular franchise across many platforms. It began over ten years ago with the 2014 reboot of Godzilla, and successfully followed a similar path to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by establishing both Godzilla and King Kong with their own films before uniting them in the 2021 movie Godzilla vs. Kong. Since then, the Monsterverse has expanded to television, including the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is about to release its second season.

What Is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 About?

Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters significantly broadened the scope of the MonsterVerse films. The series follows the Randa family over several decades, beginning with how Bill Randa and Dr. Keiko Miura first met and eventually married, and continuing to the mid-2010s with Bill’s granddaughter, Cate, taking on the work of the Monarch organization after the emergence of Godzilla (“G-Day,” as seen in the recent films). A major surprise revealed that Col. Lee Shaw, a close friend of Bill and Keiko, experienced a strange time warp while trying to reach the Hollow Earth – hours for him turned out to be 20 years on Earth. During this time, Keiko disappeared while searching for Lee.

The first season concluded with Keiko successfully escaping the Hollow Earth, but Cate and her team weren’t so lucky – they became trapped inside and experienced a strange distortion of time. When they returned, it was 2017, two years before the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. They discovered that the Apex corporation (seen in Godzilla vs. Kong) had already established a base on Skull Island, researching creatures like Kong.

Season 2 of Legacy of Monsters will take place three years after the events of Godzilla (2014), bridging the gap to King of the Monsters. By the time King of the Monsters begins, the organization Monarch will have evolved into a powerful, globally-funded group – similar to SHIELD – dedicated to researching, controlling, and fighting giant monsters (Titans). The new TV series will show us how the Randas and their team managed to convince world leaders of Monarch’s importance and built it into the organization we see in the later Monsterverse movies.

Season 2 will likely reveal the connections between Monarch and Apex, details that become important later when Apex Cybernetics attempts to build its own Titan using real Titan DNA and parts. As seen in the final act of Godzilla vs. Kong, this approach can have disastrous consequences.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Cast (& A New Monster!)

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will bring back Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, who both play the character Lee Shaw. Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett, and Anders Holm will also reprise their roles. The new season will also feature guest appearances by Takehiro Hira (known from Shōgun), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Curtiss Cook (The Chi), Cliff Curtis (Avatar: Fire and Ash), Dominique Tipper (The Expanse), and Camilo Jiménez Varón (Griselda).

Rumors suggest that Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will include appearances by both Godzilla and Kong, and introduce a new Titan called “Titan X.” Many fans believe “Titan X” is actually a code name for a reimagined classic monster from the Toho universe – something the series has done with almost every creature so far. This would make the new season a must-watch for existing fans and attract new viewers as well.
