Channel 4 is creating a new TV series based on Caroline O’Donoghue’s novel, The Rachel Incident. Sarah Greene and Daniel Ings will star in the show.
This eight-episode series, set in Cork, Ireland in 2010, follows the lives of university students Rachel and James, played by Máiréad Tyers and Ellis Howard. It’s a story about friendship, love, and the turmoil of the time, as Rachel tries to balance it all.
The story follows Rachel, a bookstore employee, who immediately falls for James. He’s charming and openly straight, and quickly asks her to move in with him. Their friendship blossoms and dramatically alters the direction of both their lives, according to the plot summary.
They’re young and wild, living a carefree, artistic life in Cork City, but the shadow of the recent economic downturn constantly reminds them of the difficulties ahead.
Greene (Bad Sisters) stars as Deenie, while Ings (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) appears as Fred.
The cast also includes Cúán Hosty-Blaney (known for House of Guinness) as Carey, Ciarán Dowd (Bad Sisters) as Ben, Helen Behan (Malpractice) as Bridget, Ardal O’Hanlon (The Woman in the Wall) as Paul, Jeanne Ní Áinle (Hidden Assets) as Sabrina, Molly McFadden as Sinead, and Maria Doyle Kennedy (KIN) as Vivian, alongside other talented actors.

O’Donoghue created, wrote, and is the executive producer of the series. Emma Fleischer is an executive producer and producer, and Megan K. Fox directs. Giulia Gandini also executive produces.
Tyers said in a statement that she is “so excited and grateful to be part of this project.”
O’Donogue praised Máiréad Tyers as a standout performer, saying she was always his top pick for the role of Rachel. He highlighted the instant chemistry between Tyers and Ellis Howard, describing their dynamic as both loving and chaotic – perfectly capturing the experience of being in your early twenties.
I’m thrilled to have Sarah Greene and Daniel Ings playing Deenie and Fred – it’s a dream come true! And I’m incredibly excited about the entire cast, who are bringing the world of ‘The Rachel Incident’ to life with so much energy.
