A star from The Simpsons has dismissed the possibility of using artificial intelligence to replace the voice actors when they eventually retire, explaining why it wouldn’t work. After airing 800 episodes over 37 seasons on Fox, the show isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. While one key voice actor recently retired, the rest of the original cast is committed to continuing the show, with plans to reach Season 40 and beyond.
I’ve been following the news about the future of The Simpsons, and it’s interesting to see how they’re planning for the day the original voice actors can’t continue. Nancy Cartwright, who famously voices Bart Simpson and several other characters, recently spoke to People magazine about what might happen after the show. She was pretty clear about one thing: she doesn’t want them to try and replace her with artificial intelligence. She feels it’s important that whoever takes over Bart has that genuine human touch that the show relies on.
The Simpsons: Nancy Cartwright Shoots Down A.I. Replacement

Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, would rather see another human take over her role than have it replaced by AI. She believes AI lacks the emotional depth – the ‘heart’ – needed for the part. ‘AI might sound like me,’ she explained, ‘but I bring passion to my work.’ Cartwright feels that as humans, we can connect with and inspire others in a way a computer simply can’t. Fortunately, she’s not alone in opposing AI replacements, which is good news for the future of animation.
Cartwright didn’t specify when he might retire, but it seems the main voice actors will continue with The Simpsons for a good while, especially with the show aiming for a Season 40 renewal with Fox. However, the show will eventually need to address the possibility of its voice cast not being able to continue indefinitely – a reality even the show’s creator has considered.
Will The Simpsons Replace Its Voice Cast?

Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, has playfully said the show will continue “until somebody dies,” but with the series now so long-running, that’s a genuine concern. Fans have observed changes in the voice cast over the years, and it’s inevitable that the actors won’t be able to continue indefinitely. A recent retirement of a key cast member suggests more will follow soon, making it a question of when, not if.
If The Simpsons ever needs to recast its voice actors, they’ve shown that hiring new talent to become the characters is more successful than trying to recreate the original voices with AI. The show has already proven this approach works well, and it’s generally preferred by both viewers and industry professionals.
