Konami surprised PlayStation fans at the February 2026 State of Play by announcing Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a game that looks great for the series’ 40th anniversary. While the trailer showed off gameplay, it left out key story details that longtime fans would appreciate. Konami is trying to keep the identity of the new main character a secret, but dedicated players who have spent years exploring Dracula’s castle will likely figure it out.
The characters in the Castlevania series – from Leon and Richter Belmont to Alucard – are central to each game they appear in. Even when featured in spin-offs or team-up games, they remain the most appealing part of any new Castlevania experience, especially for dedicated fans. With the series gaining popularity through the Netflix show and appearances in games like Dead Cells and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the hero of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is now joining the ranks of iconic gaming characters.
The Protagonist Of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Seems To Be The Daughter Of Trevor Belmont

As a long-time Castlevania fan, I was immediately excited to see they were bringing back a Belmont as the main character in Belmont’s Curse! It’s awesome to see that family legacy of monster hunters taking center stage again. The trailer starts with a letter addressed to Trevor Belmont – you might remember him from Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse – but it’s a little weird because the guy we see playing the game doesn’t look like the Trevor from the older game at all. It’s definitely a different take on the character!
Changes made to the character for the Netflix series might be the reason, but recent trailer footage hints that a different character could become the main vampire hunter. Trevor Belmont, who appeared briefly in the trailer for Castlevania: Belmont Curse, looks much older – with gray hair, a prominent scar, and a generally aged appearance, suggesting he might be retiring. Behind him, we see another figure with orange hair, mostly hidden by a hood.
The trailer shows a leaner character with long braids easily overcoming monsters in a ruined Paris and Notre Dame. This hints that the new hero could be related to Trevor Belmont – possibly his child – and continue the Belmont family line, fitting with the game’s title. Although the Netflix Castlevania series isn’t officially part of the game’s story, fans might notice the character’s hairstyle is very similar to Sypha Belnades, who had a child with Trevor after they defeated Dracula and other villains.
An Older Castlevania Character May Have Been Re-Imagined For This Modern Title

The main character in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is very similar to Sonia Belmont, who previous games established as the first vampire hunter in her family. Sonia was a playable character in Castlevania Legends, a Game Boy game from 1997, and was originally planned to return as the star of Castlevania: Resurrection, a Dreamcast game that was ultimately cancelled.
Sonia is a character who’s appeared briefly in games like Vampire Survivors, but she’s largely been a forgotten part of the Castlevania series, known mostly to dedicated fans. It seems Belmont’s Curse was intended to revive the character, updating her for a modern audience and bringing her out of obscurity. There are two possibilities: either Sonia is the name Trevor Belmont gave his daughter, as a tribute to the original Belmont, or this is a completely new version of the character who will now be a permanent part of Castlevania lore.
Sonia Belmont’s Return Signals An Incredible Journey Throughout Notre Dame & Dracula’s Castle

Honestly, Sonia Belmont was already a bit of a hidden gem in the Castlevania story, and I was thrilled to see her come back! With Trevor Belmont getting so popular thanks to the Netflix series, connecting him to Sonia is a brilliant move. It’s awesome because it brings together longtime fans of the games with people who discovered Castlevania through the show. It’s building so much hype for Belmont’s Curse – I think it could easily be the most exciting Metroidvania of 2026. I’m really looking forward to it!
Evil Empire, the team behind the popular game Dead Cells and a great Castlevania collaboration, has created a smooth and engaging gameplay experience for Sonia’s journey. This new installment appears to be a classic gothic adventure, blending the series’ dark atmosphere with thrilling action and exploration. Hints from Konami suggest Sonia could be the star of the most exciting Castlevania game in years, potentially offering a welcome return to form for fans, even building on the hidden protagonist approach of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse.
