Composer Bear McCreary, known for his work on God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok, recently discussed his return to the series with the Sons of Sparta piece, featured in a new trailer released by PlayStation.
The game’s soundtrack is remarkably well-crafted, staying with you long after you finish playing. It perfectly complements the game’s story and imagery, creating a unique and memorable atmosphere. The music especially highlights the complex bond between Kratos and his brother, Deimos, and their shared journey to become worthy Spartans.
I quickly realized that using music from my Norse saga project wouldn’t fit with the new game. Even music from the Greek games felt wrong because the stories were so different. The Sons of Sparta soundtrack is special because it mixes modern orchestral and dramatic sounds with classic, old-school video game music.
The soundtrack is a real success! It captures the feel of Kratos’ earlier adventures while still honoring the music that made the God of War series so popular. Given Bear McCreary’s history with the franchise and Mega Cat’s skill with retro games, Sons of Sparta features a score you’ll likely find yourself humming for a long time after you finish playing.
You can find a detailed look at God of War: Sons of Sparta in our featured article. The game, which costs $29.99, was unexpectedly released last week after being announced during the recent State of Play presentation. It tells the story of Kratos’s younger years.
