A free game has quietly been released on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. While the game was originally available on the first Switch in 2024 and playable on the Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, it now has a dedicated Switch 2 version. This new version offers improved graphics and performance, running at 1440p when played on a TV and 1080p in handheld mode, both at a smooth 60 frames per second.
Gameloft’s racing game, Asphalt Legends Unite, is now available for free on the Nintendo Switch 2. While it’s free to download and play, it uses a ‘free-to-play’ model, meaning it offers in-game purchases. You can enjoy the game without spending money, but you’ll likely need to put in more time and effort – or ‘grind’ – to progress compared to players who make purchases.
A Racing Game With Some Heritage
While there isn’t much professional criticism available for Asphalt Legends Unite, enough scores exist to give it an overall Metacritic score of 74. There’s a lot more feedback from players, though – for example, it currently has a 79% positive rating on Steam.
The Asphalt series isn’t just another casual game. It actually started way back in 2004 with Asphalt: Urban GT on the Nintendo DS and other consoles. Since then, there have been many different versions, and it eventually became a free-to-play game. In total, the series has been downloaded a remarkable 1.7 billion times. While there are lots of free games available, very few can claim that level of popularity, which suggests Asphalt consistently delivers a good experience.
If you’re not excited about the latest release, but you’re looking for a bargain, there’s a great sale on the eShop with Nintendo Switch games normally priced at $65 now available for only $3. Also, Gameloft has announced that the popular game Disney Dreamlight Valley is being updated for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, though this version won’t be free.
