Ronda Rousey Announces Return to MMA 10 Years After Retirement

Ronda Rousey is getting back in the ring.

After being retired from MMA for almost ten years, the fighter recently announced her return to the sport with a match against fellow ex-fighter Gina Carano.

Ronda Rousey announced on February 17th that she will fight Gina Carano in what she called the biggest fight in women’s combat sports history. In a statement to ESPN, Rousey said the fight is for all fans of mixed martial arts, both old and new, and promised more details would be coming soon.

Ronda and Gina will face off in a fight streamed live on Netflix on May 16th, an event organized by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.

Ronda Rousey, a mother of two daughters – La’akea, 4, and Liko’ula, 13 months – with her husband Travis Browne, transitioned from MMA to professional wrestling with WWE until 2023. She’s also appeared in several popular films, including the Fast & Furious and The Expendables series. Gina Carano last competed in 2009 and has since had roles in Fast & Furious 6, Deadpool, and The Mandalorian.

After Ronda, 39, announced her upcoming fight, Gina detailed how the matchup came to be. 

Ronda reached out and told me she’d only come out of retirement for one opponent – me. She said it’s always been her dream to fight me. She also thanked me for the opportunities I’ve given her throughout her career and politely asked for this fight to be made, according to a statement she gave to ESPN.

Calling the upcoming fight “an honor,” the 43-year-old confidently predicted he would win, though he expects a tough battle, which he says he welcomes.

Gina also reflected on how important the fight will be for lifelong fans of the sport.

She explained this achievement was deeply personal for both her and Ronda, as well as a celebration for the fans and the entire MMA world. She finished by saying, “It’s an incredible time to be living in!”
