Asus ROG Xbox Ally X Gets $196 Price Hike in Japan

The ROG Xbox Ally X is now more expensive in Japan. According to a report by Otaku Souken, spotted by VideoGamesChronicle, the handheld gaming PC now costs ¥169,800 (about $1,109). This is an increase of ¥30,000 (around $196) from its previous price of ¥139,800 (approximately $913).

The less expensive version of the ROG Ally will remain at its original price of ¥89,800 (around $584). Neither Asus nor Microsoft has explained the price increase for other models, but it’s likely due to recent changes in the memory market and higher RAM costs.

The ROG Xbox Ally X boasts faster RAM and more storage than the standard Xbox Ally, likely explaining its higher price. The Ally X comes with 24 GB of high-speed LPDDR5X-8000 RAM and 1 TB of storage, while the standard Ally has 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 RAM and 512 GB of storage.

Microsoft consulted with Asus when setting prices for the Xbox Series X and Series S. Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed in October 2025 that Asus’s expertise in hardware and handheld devices was valuable in making those pricing decisions.

We wanted to give people a variety of choices, and Asus was key to making that happen, since they handle the hardware. Their understanding of the market, desired features, and what customers are willing to pay ultimately determined the final prices of the devices, as Bond explained.

Although the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are relatively expensive handheld gaming PCs, initial reactions and pre-order numbers have been very strong. Bond reported that demand for the ROG Xbox Ally X was ‘overwhelming’.

I’m so thrilled to hear the game sold out on the Xbox Store! It sounds like it was a super quick sell-out at a lot of other retailers worldwide too. Honestly, seeing that kind of response makes me really confident that people are getting a great value for their money with this hardware – it’s awesome to see!

The Steam Deck is currently facing supply issues due to memory shortages. Valve recently announced that the Steam Deck OLED may be out of stock in some areas. They’ve also stopped making the 256 GB LCD model, so once those units are sold, it won’t be available anymore.

The Steam Machine is also facing delays. Valve stated that rising memory costs have required them to adjust their shipping dates and pricing. They haven’t announced a new release date yet, but confirmed they still plan to launch the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and new Steam Controller in the first six months of 2026.
