Fans have been waiting a long time, but Practical Magic 2 is finally scheduled to come out in 2026. This sequel revisits the story of the witch sisters Gillian, played by Nicole Kidman, and Sally Owens, played by Sandra Bullock. It’s amazing to think about all the memorable films that debuted in 1998, the year the original Practical Magic was released – alongside movies like The Big Lebowski and Saving Private Ryan. While some ’98 releases were… less classic (like Spice World!), Practical Magic featured a fantastic cast, including Margo Martindale as Linda Bennett and a young Evan Rachel Wood as Kylie.
2026 is shaping up to be an amazing year for movies – we’ve got Christopher Nolan’s big new film, The Odyssey, and some cool sci-fi like Project Hail Mary coming out. But honestly, as a huge fan, I’m most excited about revisiting the world of the Owens sisters. I can’t wait to get lost in that sweeping, magical story again!
‘Practical Magic 2’ Will Tell a Magical (And Highly Anticipated) Story in Fall 2026

Warner Bros.
The highly anticipated sequel, Practical Magic 2, is scheduled to arrive on September 11, 2026. The film will continue the story of the Owens sisters, the beloved witches from Massachusetts, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock returning to their iconic roles. It’s hard to imagine the sequel without them! The new story, following the happy ending of the first film, will draw inspiration from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, The Book of Magic. Producer Denise Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly in July 2024 that the sequel will honor the original characters, story, and settings.
Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic feels as visually rich and captivating as her original novel, published in 1995. The story follows Jet Owens as she faces death, while her aunts Sally and Franny, and cousin Kylie, each embark on journeys of self-discovery and romance. With settings spanning rural England, London, and Paris, a potential Practical Magic 2 could move beyond the original’s single location. It would be enjoyable to see Sally and Gillian explore a new place together! While the quaint Massachusetts town suited the first movie well, many successful sequels introduce fresh environments, and a change of scenery could work here – as long as the sisters still spend some time in their beloved hometown.
It’s also interesting to hear Di Novi say:
“we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”
It looks like Practical Magic 2 will be set many years after the original film, which is a good way to acknowledge how much older the actors have become. The Owen sisters have been dealing with their curse for a long time now, and it will be interesting to see how they’ve grown and are managing their lives in this new chapter.
The cast of Practical Magic 2 is growing with the addition of Solly McLeod, Lee Pace, Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña. Plus, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are returning to reprise their beloved roles as Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet.

Despite not being a box office success when it came out – earning only $68.3 million against a $75 million budget – Practical Magic has remained popular with viewers, solidifying its place in ’90s culture. The film is best enjoyed as a cozy autumn treat, perfect with a warm drink and a blanket, and it often sparks a fun debate: would having magical abilities like the characters Gillian and Sally be a dream come true, or a recipe for disaster?
It’s disappointing when beloved movies don’t get sequels, especially after a long wait – many horror fans are still hoping for Trick ‘r Treat 2! The upcoming Practical Magic 2 is especially exciting because, while fantastical, the original felt relatable. It’s a heartwarming story about family and accepting who you are, something many people can connect with, and the sequel promises to be just as enjoyable.
