Despite initially underperforming in cinemas three years ago, the action film Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, starring Jason Statham and directed by Guy Ritchie, is now finding success as a streaming hit on Prime Video. The movie follows top spy Orson Fortune (Statham) as he races against time to recover a valuable piece of technology before the villainous Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant) can auction it off.
Right now, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is the second most-watched movie on Prime Video. It had a rocky road to release, with its premiere date shifting several times, before finally appearing in US theaters on March 3, 2023. Although it cost $50 million to make, the action-comedy only earned $49 million worldwide, making it a box office disappointment. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad film – far from it!
‘Operation Fortune’ Shares DNA With the ‘James Bond’ Franchise
With Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, and Bugzy Malone alongside Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre delivers exactly what fans of the duo expect. It’s a fun, fast-moving film filled with action, clever dialogue, beautiful settings, and, at just under two hours, it doesn’t feel too long. It’s an energetic movie that’s easy to enjoy and provides a welcome escape. While it’s not perfect, it’s definitely more entertaining than its 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests.
Okay, so while Guy Ritchie’s film is definitely a lot more playful and comedic than your typical James Bond movie, you can totally see the influence. Both Bond and this new character, Fortune, are all about the finer things and getting things done, and Hugh Grant is having an absolute blast playing basically every Bond villain ever – super charming, but completely off the rails! And honestly, the chemistry between Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza is electric. Plaza isn’t your classic “Bond Girl” by any means, but she definitely fills that role while also having a much bigger part to play in the actual story.
Will There Ever Be an ‘Operation Fortune 2’?
Despite positive fan reactions to Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (reflected in its 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), a sequel is unlikely. The film didn’t perform well financially, and Lionsgate/Amazon MGM wouldn’t want to invest in another movie without a strong business case. Ultimately, filmmaking is a business, and if the numbers don’t add up, a continuation simply won’t happen.

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie have both been focusing on different projects, but they’re working together again on a new film called Viva La Madness. While it’s loosely inspired by Ritchie’s Layer Cake (starring Daniel Craig), it won’t be a direct sequel. Instead, Statham will play a new, unnamed protagonist. Filming is already underway in London, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
