Lindsey Vonn suffered a heartbreaking loss.
I’m absolutely heartbroken! My idol, the amazing gold medalist, just shared the most devastating news. Her sweet dog, Leo, passed away on February 9th, and it gets even worse – that was the day after her awful crash at the 2026 Olympics in Cortina! She broke her leg, and then to lose Leo so soon after… I can’t even imagine how she’s feeling. Leo was 13, which is a good long life for a dog, but still… it’s just awful. I’m sending her all my love!
Lindsey, 41, shared a series of photos on Instagram on February 18th, remembering her beloved Leo. She described the past few days as the most difficult of her life, admitting she’s still struggling to accept his passing. Leo had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, after previously overcoming lymphoma, but his heart was failing and he was in pain. His body simply couldn’t keep up with his spirit.
Lindsey explained that she couldn’t be with Leo when he passed away because she was still recovering from her injuries in Italy. She had to say goodbye from afar.
Lying in the hospital after the accident, I said goodbye to my beloved dog. It felt like I’d lost so much, so quickly. It’s hard to believe. He’d been my companion since my second ACL injury, a real source of comfort when I needed it most. I remember him cuddling with me on the couch while watching the Sochi Olympics, and always being there to cheer me up. For thirteen years, we went through everything together, and he always made me feel safe and loved.
For Lindsey, the loss of Leo in addition to her injury has taken a toll on her emotions.

She shared that it will take time to grieve, but she finds comfort knowing he’s now with her other beloved pets and family members who passed away. “He’s with Lucy, Bear, my mom, and my grandparents, and so many others I’ve lost,” she wrote. Knowing he’s no longer in pain brings her some peace. She cherishes the unique bond they shared, calling him her “first love,” and will carry his memory with her, especially during a scheduled surgery. “I’ll love you forever, my big boy,” she expressed.
Lindsey is dealing with a lot after Leo’s death. She’s also recovering from the car crash in Italy, which required multiple surgeries to fix a severe fracture in her leg.
She shared an update on February 17th via Instagram, explaining that her leg is still broken but she was finally able to travel home to America from Italy via private jet to continue her care at another hospital. She expressed gratitude to the medical staff who helped her and is looking forward to her next surgery, which will allow for more movement once the external fixator is removed from her leg.
Considering how serious her injury was, Lindsey vowed to stay positive and keep everyone updated on her progress as she recovered.
She explained that her injury was much more serious than a simple broken leg. She’s still processing everything and figuring out what comes next, and plans to share more details soon.
