How Grace Van Patten Romance Reminds Jackson White of His Parents

Jackson White isn’t lying about what he sees in his and Grace Van Patten‘s future.

I’ve been thinking about how working with my costar is reminding me of my mom, Katey Sagal, and Kurt Sutter’s relationship. They both worked together on Sons of Anarchy, and it was amazing to watch them navigate their personal and professional lives. I’m wondering if things might go similarly for us if we keep working in Hollywood together – it’s definitely something I’ve been reflecting on.

Jackson mentioned on the February 18th episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast that she’d observed parents successfully co-parenting – working together as parents – was actually happening.

Katey played the mother figure, Gemma, in the FX show for all seven seasons. The show was created by Kurt, whom she married in 2004. Their 29-year-old son highlighted how much the project felt like a part of his upbringing.

He remembered it being fantastic and a major topic of conversation in his family for years. He described the show as something deeply personal, like a child Grace and he would have shared.

Jackson added that viewers would be very familiar with Tell Me Lies, even if they hadn’t watched it, because he’s completely up-to-date on everything that happens in the show.

The Hulu series became a family project when Katey joined the cast to play Kurt’s mother on screen. Katey and her late ex-husband, Jack White, share two children: Jackson and Sarah White, 31. She also has a 19-year-old daughter, Esmé Sutter, with Kurt. Initially, Jackson was hesitant about his mother joining the show, but he later came around to the idea.

He explained to host Alex Cooper that he initially felt protective of the series, like a child not wanting to share. But then he realized involving his mom was a good thing, and it felt like everything had come together nicely.

Jackson shared that filming the series, which ended on February 17th after three seasons, occasionally blurred the lines between his on-screen character and his personal life.

The actor from Swiped shared, ‘It’s easy to get lost in a role, and I think that happened to me.’ He explained that acting—pretending for a living—can be emotionally taxing. ‘You end up carrying a little bit of everything with you, and it was difficult to maintain boundaries—to stop the lines between reality and the character from blurring.’

As Grace shared before, she and Jackson—who started dating in October 2022—were able to successfully manage the contrast between their characters’ difficult onscreen relationship and their happy real-life romance.

Speaking with TopMob News in December, the actress from Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox explained that she and her co-star are very different people, which made filming their confrontational scenes enjoyable. She said it was ‘fun to be mean and crazy’ because the characters’ behavior was so unlike anything in their own relationship.

In fact, it’s even allowed them to push boundaries with their roles.

Oh my gosh, she just gets it, you know? She was saying how amazing it is to really get into a role, and it’s even better when you have someone you completely trust right there with you. It just makes everything so much more…safe and exciting! She said it was ‘really great,’ and honestly, that’s an understatement! It’s everything!

Grace and Jackson are part of a long list of celebrity couples who fell in love while working on a movie or TV show. Here are some other stars who found romance on set.

Ryan Gosling has a history of dating co-stars, having been in relationships with both Sandra Bullock and Rachel McAdams.
