George R.R. Martin is now sharing the complete story of Aerys II Targaryen, known as the “Mad King,” and the events of Robert’s Rebellion. The play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, will premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer.
Similar to shows like HBO’s House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, The Mad King is a prequel to Game of Thrones. What makes it stand out is that it’s a stage play, unlike those other shows which were made for streaming television. More importantly, The Mad King takes place closest in time to the events of Game of Thrones, and explains how Westeros ended up in the situation we see at the beginning of the series.
