There’s talk that Square Enix might remake what many consider to be the greatest RPG of all time. When you think of the best RPG developers, Square Enix is a clear frontrunner. While companies like FromSoftware and BioWare are also highly respected, the competition for the last spot on a ‘Mount Rushmore’ of RPG developers would be fierce between Bethesda, CD Projekt Red, Atlus, and Larian Studios. Square Enix stands out as the most consistently successful and prolific RPG studio, with a long history and more timeless classics than anyone else. In fact, they have two games often cited as the best RPG ever made.
Whenever people discuss the greatest RPG ever made, a common follow-up question arises: which is the best RPG from Square Enix – Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 7? Fans of Chrono Trigger might be excited to hear a new rumor suggesting that, like Final Fantasy 7, the 1995 game is also getting a remake.
The Best SNES RPG Finally Getting a Remake?
Despite being incredibly popular for 31 years, Chrono Trigger hasn’t received a full remake or even a remaster – it’s only been ported to different platforms, sometimes with minor improvements. However, a recent rumor from John Harker suggests that might finally be changing.
Harker wasn’t a widely known source recently, but they were a reliable insider in the early 2010s. When a Square Enix survey asked fans what remakes they’d like to see, Harker stated that work on a Chrono project is already underway. While they didn’t specify if it’s a remake or a remaster, the conversation centered around remakes.
Previous Teases From Chrono Trigger Creator
A recent rumor about a possible remake of Chrono Trigger comes after comments made last December by the game’s co-creator, Yuji Horii. When asked directly about a remake during a panel discussion, Horii didn’t give a clear answer. He simply laughed and said he couldn’t comment, adding that he’d get in trouble if he did.
One of the Best Games of All Time
Many consider Chrono Trigger to be not just one of the greatest RPGs ever made, but one of the best video games, period. Its high score of 96 on GameRankings supports this claim. However, despite its critical acclaim, the game has only sold around five million copies, meaning a lot of players have missed out on this SNES classic. While a simple remaster wouldn’t likely attract many new fans, a full remake could be huge – potentially one of the biggest releases in recent years. If Square Enix approached it with the same care and quality as their Final Fantasy 7 remake, it would be a massive success.
Just keep in mind that this is just a rumor for now. We’d love to hear your thoughts – share them in the comments below, or discuss it with other fans on the ComicBook Forum!
