Bad Bunny to lead all-star “epic” historical drama Porto Rico opposite Oscar winner

Only weeks after his incredible Super Bowl performance, Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican music sensation, will star in a new movie called Porto Rico.

This historical film is a passionate tribute to Puerto Rico and marks the directorial debut of René “Residente” Pérez Joglar, a celebrated musician with multiple Grammy Awards. According to Deadline, Joglar co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, who won an Oscar for his work on the film Birdman.

Benito Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny, is set to play José Maldonado Román, a Puerto Rican revolutionary famous as Águila Blanca (White Eagle).

Born in 1874 and passing away in 1932, Roman was a key figure in his island’s fight for independence. A film about his life will tell the story of how he united a group of former prisoners to challenge colonial rule and help forge a unique national identity.

The movie is based on real events, but it’s unclear how closely it will follow actual history. It might take some creative liberties. However, Residente, who worked on the project, says it’s meant to be a powerful and truthful look at our past – a story told with the respect it deserves.

He shared that he’s always wanted to create a film about Puerto Rico, ever since he was a kid. He explained that the island’s real history has often been a subject of debate and disagreement.

Although this is Ocasio’s first time as the main actor, he’s already appeared in several well-known projects. He’s had supporting roles in films like Bullet Train, Cassandro, and Caught Stealing, and he was also a recurring character on the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico.

He’s filming in Puerto Rico with a star-studded cast, including Edward Norton, Viggo Mortensen, and Javier Bardem. Specifics about what roles they’ll play haven’t been revealed yet.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the acclaimed Mexican director who won Academy Awards for Birdman and The Revenant, is also an executive producer on the project.
