The 1990s were a special time for entertainment, especially movies. Audiences loved the iconic films released across all genres, and filmmakers weren’t afraid to experiment. These creative risks paid off, leading to advancements in CGI and movies that truly defined the decade – and still resonate with viewers today. Now, one of the most outrageous and over-the-top sci-fi hits from that era is back for streaming on Paramount+.
I was so excited to see that Face/Off is back on Paramount+! It just left Netflix a few weeks ago. This movie, starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, has one of the craziest plots I’ve ever seen. They play a terrorist and an FBI agent who have surgery to swap faces – everything changes! The agent needs to find a bomb, and this wild procedure is how he tries to do it. Even though it sounds totally unbelievable, Face/Off was a massive success when it came out.
Despite The Bonkers Premise, Face/Off Is a Great Movie

The concept of an FBI agent switching identities with a terrorist – even to stop a bombing – sounds completely unbelievable, and as you might expect, things don’t go as planned. Cage’s terrorist takes advantage of the swap, impersonating Travolta’s agent. Despite this outlandish premise, Face/Off is a genuinely excellent movie. A key reason it works so well is that both Cage and Travolta aren’t just acting as their characters; they’re playing characters pretending to be each other. This creates a complex and captivating effect, showcasing the actors’ abilities in a way that’s unique to this film.
Beyond its thrilling plot, Face/Off is a remarkably stylish film. Director John Woo brings the visual flair of his earlier Hong Kong movies to this American production, using slow-motion and inventive camera work to make even the most over-the-top action sequences look surprisingly graceful. Combined with committed performances that lean playfully into the film’s absurdity and its incredibly outlandish story, Face/Off stands out as one of the most delightfully unhinged – and genuinely great – movies of the 1990s. It’s a film that has maintained a devoted following for decades, and fans are still hoping for a sequel.
