After a decade since its last TV broadcast, the beloved British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is making a comeback. The show initially aired from 1988 to 1999, with a break from 1993 to 1997, before the BBC cancelled it, believing interest had waned. However, despite the broadcaster’s lack of enthusiasm – they even turned down the chance to make a Red Dwarf movie before 2007 – the show retained a dedicated fanbase. This led to a successful revival, with four more seasons and a special episode airing between 2009 and 2020.
The special, The Promised Land, turned out to be the final Red Dwarf TV release when UKTV decided to stop making scripted comedies. Although Red Dwarf remained popular, it seemed the show was over. Now, however, the original creator, Rob Grant, is bringing the sci-fi series back with a brand new prequel novel called Red Dwarf: Titan, scheduled to be released on July 16, 2026.
What To Expect From Red Dwarf: Titan
Red Dwarf: Titan is a brand new novel, the first in three decades, and it explores a previously unseen part of the Red Dwarf universe. Written by Grant Naylor and Andrew Marshall – who previously collaborated on the comedy shows Quanderhorn and The Nether Regions – the book delves into the events that happened before the disaster that killed everyone on board the mining ship, a period rarely shown in the TV series.
Before disaster strikes, the mining ship Red Dwarf is orbiting Titan, and the crew is preparing for some time off planet, each with their own plans. But their leave is interrupted by a strange message from the future. Two crew members who can’t stand each other are suddenly thrown into a desperate, fast-paced mission to save all of reality. Get ready – the crew of Red Dwarf is facing their biggest challenge yet on Titan!
The conflict between two crew members will likely focus on Lister and Rimmer, as a preview shown by Ganymede TV for this project featured younger versions of them. This hint from three years ago has now become a full novel. Although fans are still hoping for a new Red Dwarf TV series, strong book sales demonstrate continued interest in the show and could encourage its creators to bring it back to television.
