Everyone expected a second installment of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s KPop Demon Hunters after the first movie became Netflix’s most popular animated film ever. However, fans hoping for a quick return to the story received disappointing news. Recent reports suggest KPop Demon Hunters 2 might not be released until 2029, meaning a wait of several years. Director and writer Maggie Chang recently shared an update on the sequel’s progress.
In a recent Bloomberg interview, Chang hinted at a sequel, suggesting it’s likely to happen given the popularity of follow-up films. However, he explained that animation takes considerable time, so fans will have to be patient. He expressed his excitement to start working on a new movie and share it with the world, noting that he knows many people are hoping for a continuation of the story. KPop Demon Hunters’ Golden Run

Even though the next KPop Demon Hunters movie is still a few years off, 2026 is looking bright for the franchise. The first film has received major Oscar nominations this year, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for its hit single, “Golden.” While competing against strong contenders like Zootopia 2, Elio, and Arco, an Oscar win isn’t guaranteed, but the film has a good chance of taking home an award next month.
In addition to the new movie, Netflix has big plans for the world of KPop Demon Hunters. Insiders have compared it to Disney’s Frozen, suggesting Netflix hopes to expand the franchise with a live-action series, animated show, and even a global tour. Although specific details are still under wraps, the success of the recent film could mean we’ll hear more about these projects soon.
Following the huge popularity of KPop Demon Hunters, director Chang spoke last year about a possible sequel. He and the screenwriter suggested they have plenty of ideas for continuing the story with these characters, and that any follow-up would need to be a compelling story that both they and the audience would enjoy.
