New Spider-Man TV Show Is Finally Something To Ease the Wait for $690M Spidey Sequel After Major Delays

When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out in 2018, it quickly became known as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. Many people wondered if an animated Spider-Man film was needed after three live-action versions, but Into the Spider-Verse won audiences over with its amazing animation and a touching story that finally gave Miles Morales the spotlight. It’s no surprise that the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was also a huge success in 2023. It received similar praise from critics and earned an impressive $690.8 million at the box office.

The movie Across the Spider-Verse ended with a shocking cliffhanger that fans are eager to see resolved, but the third movie in the series has taken a long time to develop. Originally planned for release in 2024, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now expected in 2027 due to delays. While fans still have over a year to wait for the final chapter, a new Spider-Man project is coming out to help pass the time.

Spider-Noir Helps Ease the Wait for Beyond the Spider-Verse

This summer, Marvel is releasing a new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but fans of the Spider-Verse have something to look forward to on television as well. In May, Spider-Noir will premiere on Prime Video, with Nicolas Cage playing the lead role. Cage first voiced Spider-Man Noir in the animated film Into the Spider-Verse, and his humorous take on the character – a cynical detective who becomes a superhero – quickly made him a fan favorite, leading to this new spin-off series.

Nicolas Cage isn’t reprising his role as Peter Parker from the Spider-Verse movies; instead, he plays a version of Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir. Despite this, the show still feels connected to the animated films. That’s partly because Nicolas Cage is involved, instantly linking the two for viewers, and also because Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are executive producers on Spider-Noir. Though they didn’t work on the episodes directly, their involvement is a good sign, further strengthening the connection between the show and the movies.

While Spider-Noir isn’t directly continuing the story from the Spider-Verse movies, it aims to capture the same creative spirit that made those films so great. It has the potential to be one of the most compelling Marvel shows of the year, thanks to its unique style and storytelling. Like the Spider-Verse films, Spider-Noir is breaking new ground, offering something truly different in the superhero world. Inspired by classic film noir – and even available to watch in black and white – the show features a gritty, world-weary hero in Ben Reilly, a detective pushed to his limits. Although audiences have seen stories about heroes grappling with inner turmoil, Spider-Noir presents this familiar theme in a strikingly original way.

The creativity shown in Spider-Noir makes it a great story to release between Spider-Verse movies. To keep comic book adaptations interesting as pop culture changes, creators need to be innovative and put their own spin on familiar ideas. While Spider-Noir and the Spider-Verse films look and feel very different, they share a similar energy, proving there are still fresh ways to tell superhero stories. Watching Spider-Noir will remind audiences what they loved about Spider-Verse. If Nicholas Cage’s Ben Reilly becomes as popular as his Peter Parker, he might even appear in Beyond the Spider-Verse, nicely connecting everything together.
