Each season has hinted at epic battles, but those glimpses only left fans wanting more. The season 2 finale promised a huge conflict, which was exciting but also a bit unsatisfying. Now, it looks like we’re finally going to see those battles play out, including what’s shaping up to be one of the most brutal in the entire A Song of Ice and Fire story.

We see Baela Targaryen on her dragon, Moondancer, and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) riding what appears to be Syrax, though it might be Helaena on Dreamfyre. These dragons are flying over a huge naval battle, with Corlys Velaryon and his fleet fighting other ships – it looks like the Battle of the Gullet.

The Battle of the Gullet was a particularly brutal conflict in Westeros and a key turning point in the Dance of Dragons. It’s expected to be a major focus in season 3 of House of the Dragon, and will likely feature a rare sight: multiple dragons clashing in battle.

The Battle of the Gullet is a sea fight between two factions – the Blacks and the Greens. The Blacks, commanded by Corlys Velaryon and his fleet, had surrounded King’s Landing, preventing ships from entering or leaving. As a huge fan, I’m really hoping the Battle of the Gullet becomes a defining moment for House of the Dragon, just like the Blackwater and Battle of the Bastards were for Game of Thrones. Those battles were massive events the whole show built towards, and I’ve been expecting something similar for HOTD. There was even talk that the Battle of the Gullet might be the season two finale, which would be incredible!

Ryan Condal, the showrunner, explained the reasons behind not including the battle in season 2, as he discussed with IGN.

Making a TV show, even one with a big budget, always involves trade-offs. No one has unlimited time or money, so as a showrunner, you’re constantly balancing the story you want to tell with what’s realistically possible. With Season 2, we started thinking about the overall arc of the series and where it was heading. This led us to adjust the storyline, keeping the ultimate ending in mind. We wanted to give ‘The Battle of the Gullet’ the attention it deserved, and as the finale shows, we were building towards it. We felt it was important to give the event enough time and depth to truly excite and satisfy fans, and to create a sense of anticipation leading up to it.

Ryan Condal clearly understands the significance of the Battle of the Gullet within the story of House of the Dragon. Although omitting it initially made the second season feel incomplete, delaying it allows the battle to be properly developed and showcased, which was probably the correct choice.
