Video games and anime are a perfect match, much like peanut butter and chocolate. Many popular anime series, including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia, continue to inspire new video games. And we’ve seen the reverse happen too – games like Devil May Cry and Castlevania have become successful anime series, especially on platforms like Netflix. Despite this success, there are still some well-known anime that haven’t been turned into video games yet.
7.) Dandadan

The reason we haven’t seen a Dandadan video game yet is likely because the series is still relatively new. The characters – Momo, Okarun, their friends, and enemies – would all translate well to a game, perhaps as a fighting game or an action RPG that explores the supernatural world they inhabit. Dandadan first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2021, and the anime, which premiered in 2024, has significantly boosted its popularity. Although nothing is official, a Dandadan video game seems very likely in the future.
6.) Cowboy Bebop

I think most anime fans would agree that Cowboy Bebop is incredibly popular – it’s often mentioned as one of the all-time greats. Because it’s held in such high regard, it’s understandable why game developers might be hesitant to try and adapt it – they wouldn’t want to mess it up. But honestly, that universe is just made for a video game. You wouldn’t even necessarily need to play as Spike, Faye, Jet, or Ed. An open-world game where you could travel to different planets and hunt bounties would be amazing – it’s a perfect fit!
5.) Outlaw Star

Although Outlaw Star shares some themes with Cowboy Bebop, a video game adaptation could be quite different from a Cowboy Bebopstyle game. The diverse skills and abilities of characters like Gene Starwind and his crew would lend themselves well to gameplay, allowing players to embody each one. With the anime having been off the air for years, a new game could be a fantastic way to revive the franchise and reintroduce Gene and his team to a wider audience. Revivals are popular in anime and animation, and Outlaw Star* is definitely due for one.
4.) Guyver

It was surprising to find out that there’s never been a video game based on Guyver. The original Bio-Booster Armor Guyver started as an animated short in 1986, followed by a twelve-episode series in 1989 and a revival in 2005. With two live-action movies also made in the West, a Guyver video game could really breathe new life into the franchise. The series, featuring a hero encased in an alien battle suit fighting incredibly intense and bloody battles, seems perfectly suited for the gaming world.
3.) Redline

A video game based on the anime Redline would be a fantastic addition to the racing game genre. The original 2009 anime was a thrilling, sci-fi take on racing and is widely considered one of the best in its category. A Redline game could prioritize the fast-paced races themselves, rather than a heavy focus on storyline. While many anime have been adapted into games, racing games based on anime are surprisingly rare.
2.) Fire Force

It’s surprising that Fire Force hasn’t gotten an official video game, considering how popular the action-packed anime and manga have become. The manga concluded in 2022, and the anime, produced by David Production, is wrapping up after three seasons. Interestingly, a fan-made game called Fire Force Online launched on Roblox last year and has become quite popular, giving fans a taste of what an official game could be like.
1.) Princess Mononoke

It’s not surprising that Studio Ghibli’s animated films haven’t often been adapted into video games. The studio hasn’t usually licensed its stories for game development. However, one film seems perfectly suited for the gaming world: Princess Mononoke. Not only is it a Studio Ghibli masterpiece, but its magical setting would look stunning as an interactive game.
