A well-known actor is back in the world of Star Wars, and fans have been waiting for this! The new movie arrives in theaters on May 22nd, and it’s the first Star Wars film released in cinemas since Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film will wrap up the story that started with The Mandalorian on Disney+.
The upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, isn’t just the result of everything Star Wars has been building on Disney+ – it’s also a tribute to the franchise. The newest trailer reveals that a beloved character from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will appear in live-action for the first time, and this return could lead to a larger story arc for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Embo Will Return in The Mandalorian & Grogu
The latest trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu features Embo, a Kyuzo mercenary recognizable by his large hat and hunting dog. He first appeared during the Clone Wars in Star Wars and quickly gained a dedicated fanbase despite having a relatively small role.
Embo is a highly skilled bounty hunter, known throughout the galaxy. This reputation led him to be involved in a covert operation to kidnap Chancellor Palpatine while he was speaking on Naboo—an event that foreshadowed larger conflicts. Despite his profession, Embo wasn’t always on the side of villains. Throughout the Clone Wars, he occasionally joined forces with Jedi like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano, working to safeguard innocent people on Felucia.
Fans have been waiting a long time to see the bounty hunter Embo brought to life in a live-action Star Wars project. He’s only appeared in animation so far, specifically The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. Although The Mandalorian and Grogu will likely use CGI to create Embo, it’s still going to be amazing to see this character fully realized with live-action effects.
It’s intriguing to see Embo back, especially considering the timeline of The Mandalorian and Grogu. We don’t know much about what happened to him after the Clone Wars, but sources indicate he lived through the events of the original Star Wars trilogy. Now, The Mandalorian and Grogu confirm he’s still a skilled bounty hunter after the Empire’s defeat, and it’s unclear what his future holds.
How Embo Will Factor Into The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Story
I’m honestly shocked by how important Embo seems to be in the new Mandalorian and Grogu movie! There’s a lot of talk that he might be the main villain, or at least a really powerful bad guy working for someone even more dangerous hiding behind the scenes. I didn’t see this coming at all!
Embo probably works with the Hutts, who are definitely coming back in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The story suggests someone will use their family connections to hire Embo, possibly for a dangerous task. This indicates The Mandalorian and Grogu will spend more time exploring the criminal side of the galaxy than focusing on the return of the Empire and Grand Admiral Thrawn, though that storyline will continue in a future movie by Dave Filoni.
Embo has a surprising connection to Darth Sidious. After the Emperor died in Return of the Jedi, Embo might have been involved in a secret plan to create clones of Sidious. Recent Star Wars shows like The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch seem to be hinting at this. Embo’s return in The Mandalorian and Grogu could reveal more about how the Emperor came back to life, ultimately leading to the events in The Rise of Skywalker.
Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to with Boba Fett’s return! It’s exciting that this legendary bounty hunter will appear in live-action for the first time, and his comeback could lead to even larger stories within the Skywalker Saga.
The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
