It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly a year since the Fantastic Four joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With Avengers: Doomsday not coming out until the Christmas season, fans will have to wait a while longer to see the team back in action. Luckily, Marvel fans can still learn about the team’s story through comics, and we’ve got an exclusive preview!
On March 25th, a new comic book series begins exploring the early days of the Fantastic Four! Fantastic Four: First Foes #1 is the first of four special issues that will show fans how this legendary Marvel team first became heroes. This first issue, written by Dan Slott and illustrated by Mark Buckingham, features a battle against the classic villain, the Mad Thinker. While previews shared with ComicBook don’t reveal major plot points, they offer a glimpse of the challenge ahead—and fans of H.E.R.B.I.E. have a special treat in store. You can see a sneak peek below!
Fantastic Four: First Foes Pays Off on Classic Villains Mentioned In the Movie

The comic Fantastic Four: First Foes #1 introduces the origin story of the Fantastic Four – four astronauts transformed into heroes by a strange accident. However, not everyone is thrilled with their emergence. The Mad Thinker, a classic Fantastic Four villain who first appeared in 1965, feels overlooked and plans to use the city against the team. While longtime Marvel fans know him well, newer fans might recognize his name as one of the villains the Fantastic Four previously battled, as mentioned in last summer’s movie. The inclusion of classic villains like the Mad Thinker in the film could hint at future opponents for the team in this expanded universe.

As a comic book and movie fan, I found a clever tie-in with the new Fantastic Four comic, First Foes #1. It’s a satisfying nod to the source material seen in the film, but it doesn’t stop there. The comic includes a two-page “Fantastic Science” section, penned by the current Fantastic Four writer, Ryan North, and directly inspired by Reed Richards’ in-universe educational segments from the movie. Honestly, between the main story and this feature, First Foes #1 seems like the ideal way to keep fans engaged while we wait for the next big screen adventure – and it’s sure to delight longtime comic readers as well.
Fantastic Four: First Foes #1 goes on sale March 25th from Marvel Comics.
