After being originally released for the Game Boy Advance over 20 years ago, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are coming back!
These games are updated versions of the very first Pokémon games, originally released as Pokémon Red and Blue (known as Red and Green in Japan).
Look, Pokémon has gone back to Kanto a few times, like with Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, but for me, FireRed and LeafGreen are still the best way to experience the original Kanto region. They came out in 2004 and honestly, they just haven’t been topped yet.
Ever since the original Switch came out, fans have been eagerly asking for older Pokémon games to be re-released on the console, as it seems like a great fit for those titles.

Great news for Pokémon fans! Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are officially coming to the Nintendo eShop!
Get ready, Pokémon fans! Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are officially coming to Nintendo Switch on February 27, 2026 – which also happens to be Pokémon Day and the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise.
Each game will cost £16.99 or $19.99. While that’s a little pricey for a game that’s over 20 years old, it’s much better than risking money on a potentially counterfeit cartridge from a site like eBay.
Like the first game, you can battle and trade Pokémon locally. Plus, Pokémon Home support will be added soon, letting you move your Pokémon to future games.
A unique physical version will also be released in Japan. It comes with a collectible Game Boy Advance-style box and a set of glass marbles featuring the first three Pokémon from the Kanto region.
Many fans were hoping for completely updated versions of FireRed and LeafGreen, but being able to play the original games more easily is fantastic news. It definitely gives hope – especially to fans like me – that Pokémon Emerald could be re-released someday.
